Martial Arts Question

Hey guys. I know some of you are doing martial arts and are experienced with it. I plan to start myselft but i still have to choose what kind of martial arts it will be. I remember a discussion on this forum where you talked about advantages, disadvantages and styles of different kinds of martial arts.
As i'm completely new to the topic it'd be nice if you could tell me what style i should start with. It seems the ones my uni is offering are:

-Taekwon-Do

-Shotokan-Karate

-Aikido

-Judo

I hope you can help me a bit with my choice.

Shotokan-Karate should be completely crossed off your list forever. The other three are cool in they're own respects.

I did judo for around 18 years (from 3-4 years old till I was 21)

To be perfectly honest I hated most other martial arts mainly for the following reasons

I did karate for about 2 years alongside judo when I was about 14. I didnt like it because there was never any action. It was completely non-contact (99.9 percent of the time) and it was very much the american football of martial arts. Stop start. stop start after every punch/hit.

Judo is more keep going till the time is over or you have crippled your opponent. Its also VERY physical and completely 100% contact sport. Its what gets the adrenaline going knowing you may be handed your ass in the next match. I also found the names of the moves easier to pronounce and understand (not that that makes much of a difference but it would if you are going for 15 mon or above (see blue ---> black) Also Black belt is ALOT harder to accomplish in judo than most other martial arts. It took me 15 years to get to Full Blue (I belt away from black) whilst in karate I saw little younglings running around with black belts.

Also If you get into a pub brawl or a real life fight. judo is where its at. Karate vcan teach you to punch and kick but if you got some 200 pound guy running towards you or anyone inside striking range its useless (IMO) Judo teaches you to use counter weights to your advantage ..... suddenly that 200 pound guy is no longer that big a threat since you know about counter weights.

Like I said I did Judo for around 18 years. I got to Full Blue. I made a couple of newspapers. I was european champion (Weight category) for 2 years when I was 12- 14. Its a mental challenge, its a physical challenge and its primarily full contact.

when i was younger, i did Taekwon-Do. its more of a defence orentated style, its mostly based on simple attacks and when they should be applied and when you would be able to play off of there attacks to you're advantige.. it was fun,

i stopped a Green Belt Blue Stripe.

btw, the Rankings are:
White belt ( noob )
White Belt Yellow Stripe
Yellow Belt
Yellow belt Green Stipe
Green Belt
Green Belt Blue Stripe
Blue belt
Blue Belt Red Stripe
Red belt
Red belt Back Stripe
Black Belt
2Nd Degree Black belt ( has a White Stripe on it )
3rd Degree Black Belt ( Has a Yellow on it also )
etc etc. Untill they hit 5th dagree, thats what my Sensai was.

all in all, it was fun, they dident use much weapon's, it was mostly Melee, or small things like Sticks and etc.

it was a fun experance, Tobad that my Sensai closed his dojo.

:) I used to do judo when i was 5 or 6. I even had a yellow belt. To bad i don't remember much of it anymore besides the falling techniques. Oh... and our chief (sensei?) had a red-white belt. He was awesome!

Thanks for your comments so far, esp. pyro and amidyfreak :icon14:

Aikido is somehow attracting me. Getting one of these Hakama would be kickass!

Depends on what you want out of it. I suggest Judo, will be the most useful one of those 4 outside the dojo.

Do not ever try Isshinryu. Shit style and gets crap ratings in competitions.
