When the fuck did STDs become known as 'STIs'?

What the fuck is up with that?

"Oh no we can't use word 'disease', it's far too negative."

"So what can we call puss and blood dripping from elongated minge flaps?"

"I know! We'll call it an illness."

"Huzzah!"

What the flying fuck.

WTF? I'm still calling them diseases.
That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet.

...or something like that.

edit: That which we call a skin rash on the foreskin would sting as much. :icon32:

Where did you get this from? A search on STI doesn't bring up much. Only one relevant result which refers to it as "Sexually Transmitted Infection", which doesn't exactly sound better than illness or disease.

STD's are now called STI's due to the fact it's more correct to call them infections due to the way it's transmitted, or something.

All I know is that we were taught in sex ed a couple of years ago that they were STIs, and that I get my blood test results back in a week (no, seriously)

wikipedia saves the day again:
However, just because STD and STI are often used interchangeably, it does not mean that they are the exactly the same thing. As quoted from http://www.etharc.org, "Sometimes the terms STI and STD are used interchangeably. This can be confusing and not always accurate, so it helps first to understand the difference between infection and disease. Infection simply means that a germ – virus, bacteria, or parasite – that can cause disease or sickness is present inside a person’s body. An infected person does not necessarily have any symptoms or signs that the virus or bacteria is actually hurting their body (they do not necessarily feel sick). A disease means that the infection is actually causing the infected person to feel sick, or to notice something is wrong. For this reason, the term STI – which refers to infection with any germ that can cause an STD, even if the infected person has no symptoms – is a much broader term than STD.

calling VD an STI does make this conversation a bit strange.

"hey mate, I just bought an STI... wanna go out to the club and show it off?"
