Alien Planet

Watching this now and it’s very interesting; basically it’s a CGI simulation of what we think we could find if we sent probes to other solar systems/planets. In this particular case we send probes to Darwin 4 (takes 42 years to reach traveling 20% the speed of light), which is 6.5 light years away from Earth.

Imdb doesn't give it much credit but it's really interesting if you like the subject, not sure how accurate all the science is but Stephen Hawking is there so I assume it's at least partially accurate.

Sounds like an excuse to let some computer geek at the discovery channel finally make some use his bryce and 3d studio max skills...

I saw it when it first aired. The quality is very good, Canis. Even the animations are believable.

Alright, I don't get this.
My understanding is that if something is 6.5 million light years away, it takes light 6.5 million years to travel between there and here.
Therefore, travelling at 20% of the speed of light, it would still take 1.3 million years to get there.
So where am I going wrong?

distance: 6.5m lightyears
speed 0.2 lightyears/year

your calculations are wrong, so is the 40y thing.

lol yeah sorry I clearly went the wrong way there.
More like 33 million years.

Opps, I meant to say 6.5 light years and it's 42 years.

I don't think that alien life sould necessarily be so alien

This is what I think alien life would look like

That dude always plays creepy, disgusting parts in films....ugh!

i think any probes sent to other planets will almost certainly be eaten by sandworms or headcrabs
IT'S SO OBVIOUS!!!!

You're pedantic

What do you mean? I posted my understanding of how light years worked because I couldn't figure out the statement above.
How is checking your knowledge pedantic?

Those don't look anything like the aliens on the show.

Basically the show was "look at the alien creatures we thought up and made into CG"
Basically if you get down to it, everyone is guessing as to what is out there. The program I guess is more geared towards showing those that dont have any imagination something "unreal" that they can talk about at the water cooler the next day..... I have no doubt the program was prolly okay to watch, but really........ its hardly concrete evidence of Life on another planet is it.
besides any "idea" of life that we have comes directly from the ideas that we form from animals on this planet. You cant think of something you havent seen before. IE aliens = cross between shell fish and ants.
life could be anything visible invisible, inter plantery dimensional, based on copper instead of carbon anything.

I thought it was pretty good but it does get quite crazy and maybe a little dull near the end, worth watching imo.
Now this is all simply speculations, for all we know no life outside of our planet exists. But then again wouldn’t it be smart for us to begin researching more into space exploration. I mean if you look at the decade before this, so much technology has been created as a result of the last space age. So even if we don’t find what we are looking for at least we will gain more knowledge and create some cool technology.
Our primary goal should be in creating a vehicle that can reach enormous speeds while using fuel that’s widely available in space. I don’t think it’s impossible for us to reach 50% light speed if we spend a good 20 years researching it.
Our second goal would be to create artificial intelligence that could function with out human interaction, since it would be impractical to communicate with a probe that’s several light years away.
Everything else we pretty much have covered, even today. Even if it takes us 70 years to do anything worthwhile at least we could do it. What are your thoughts?
I think a mission to mars and possibly its moons is also not impractical by about 2020.

How can you sum up what the show is without having seen it? That's not all of what the show was about. They go into great detail about how those aliens are plausible.

Our primary goal should be to make a submersible that can explore the other 90% of the ocean we haven't been to yet. For all the billions of species of animal we think live on the surface and near the surface, there are tens of billions more in the deepest depths of the ocean we are totally clueless to. You want to see aliens? Dive 2 miles below sea level.

my point is that any alien is possible because "physics" is only relavent to the world in which we percieve and know.
same with chemistry same with biology same with maths...... etc etc etc.
any alien is plausible is my point..... that is what makes it alien.
