they've been coming out with sensationalist bullshit like this for a while now, maybe trying to suss public opinion on id cards or draw attention away from the scary new anti-terror laws that are coming in.

but memph is right, the only thing that 'instant justice' would lead to is more assaults on the police.

I'm a law abiding citizen. If you havn't done anything wrong you have nothing to fear.

Those who break the law must be punished. I have no problem with that.

What I do have a problem with is changes in our laws and the removal of civil liberties.

..."modernisation" of the force should be carried forward by introducing "an escalator of powers" for the dispensing of instant justice...
oh noes not more "modernisation". someone should "modernise" this guys arse into a dole queue somewhere
He conceded that such powers should be dispensed with care "and without turning the place into a police state, which would be unfortunate".
unfortunate? UN-FUCKING-FORTUNATE??!!111

someone please sack this cock

Yea. It seems to me that just the fact he would say it is pretty alarming.

I would like to say that a police chief over here who said that would be canned immediately.... But I don't really think that would be the case these days. :smirk:

news flash!!! police CAN seize vehicles and driving licences already, but then goto court to have a licence removed from the person, or the vehicle seized permanantly.

and how often do police seize vehicles at the moment? not very fucking often. and only if they break a very specific series of critera (sp)

Cops can't take licenses. You don't turn your license in until after you're convicted of the crime.

edit: And they can impound/tow your car (unless you have somebody to drive it home for you), but they can't seize it until you go to court.

If you refuse a breathalyzer you instantly lose your license for a year. Isn't that the same thing?

and issue anti-social behaviour orders on the spot.
what

rook, i am uk man, which is what this is about. and yes, policemen can seize your licence, in its physical form, but you can still drive until a magistrate or crown court decide to take it from you, then you can't drive leglly.

and as for seizing, if the car is being using in an anti social manner (in the eyes of the law), for instance a cruise, then they warn once, then if you are seen taking the same actions within 3 months of the initial occurance, then they can take your car.

technically no, if you refuse over here, then you will be arrested for failing to provide a specimen of breathe, then, if the test then comes out positive, you then follow what i mentioned above. but you got the gist of it NS

anti social behaviour...such as repeat offenders of public order offences, can be issued to an individual to prevent them from being in a particular place at a specified time. i.e. a group of kids outside a shopping precinct.....if a ring leader or repeat offender is identified then an asbo can be issued to prevcent them from being there between specified hours. and if they are caught there, then they can be arrested and taken to the earliest court appearence.

No, you still don't lose it until you go to court. The cop doesn't take it away.

That's the implied consent law, which states that you consent to a breathalyzer (or blood or urine test) simply by getting a drivers license.

Still, they have to prove you broke that law in court before they can revoke your driving priveleges.

Sorry, I thought you were American.

Still, don't you have to go to court? I mean, even if the officer physically takes your license, don't you have to go to court and be convicted before it goes on your record that you aren't allowed to drive?

This article is about removing courts from the equation in certain circumstances - at least the way I read it. You wouldn't be able to go to court if you wanted to.

...because once the cop starts handling them roughly, the gay dudes love it and scream out "oh give it to me daddy!!!", which the cops dont like...
