What's the best program to make straight copies of dvds? I'm talking about dvds which I already own of course. If this is taboo feel free to delete it.

I prefer cloneDVD with AnyDVD. AnyDVD removes any protection on the fly.

DVDShrink - copy
DVDDecrypter - burn (and sometimes decrypt to VOBs, then use DVDShrink to make ISO)

can you people explain what these programs do exactly? I think if I understood the process a bit more I'd find it easier to get my head around.

DVD43 for on the fly decrypting, and DVDShrink for ripping, w/ Nero for burning.

DVD Decrypter basically let's you rip the DVD and removes protection.
You can actually rip it directly to an ISO image.

DVD Shrink let's you remove parts of the movie to make it smaller and you can compress certain areas.
Like if you want the whole DVD you can compress areas like the extras while trying to keep the movie uncompressed as much as possible.

Also some movies have full screen and wide screen on the DVD.
This way you can remove the version you don't want. You can also remove the different sound variations. Like removing 2 ch. stereo sound might save you 250 MB.

Edit: If you have dual layer DVD's then DVD Decrypter is all you need.
Just rip directly to ISO and burn.

Yep. But if you don't have dual-layer DVDs, you'll have to do some compressing.

It's best if you take out the extras and such so you don't have to compress the movie anymore than necessary.

of all the movies i've ripped, only one needed DVDDecrypter before re-authoring with DVDShrink. it seems DVDShrink decrypts too. either that or most disks aren't actually encrypted, which sounds unlikely given all the blah about encryptionthey have in their copyright blather
