When me and some mates get back to uni in the next few weeks we will be attempting to set up a internet radio station of some kind.

The first thing that springs to mind is shoutcast, but i've only ever used it one so im not sure on a few things on it.

ie can you broadcast live with a mic on it? or is it purly streaming based?

bandwidth is no problem as we can use the uni's phat pipe, its just the means of transmitting we need to sort out.

Ideas anyone?

I think shoutcast is the best, I hope you don't plan to play commercial music because I think (I could be wrong) you can get fined if you don't pay royalties or something.

Shoutcast is the obvious choice because everyone and their mum has a media player which can receive the stream.

How do you propose to use the university connection? Most universities filter their outgoing connections quite heavily, even connections to the dorms.

We're not in dorms, we're in other accommodation now not accessing the uni's connection.

We know the admins quite well so we're actually going to discuss it with them directly.

We wont be playing commerical music, but free downloaded music and chats etc.

But can you do live streams on shoutcast?

yes, that's what it's for.

Shoutcast is just a method of sending and receiving. It'll take any audio input. All you do is set your Pc up to listen to whatever input you like, then string that input to your mic/winamp/tape deck/whatever.
