I just googled "fighter of the year" and "mortal kombat" and didn't get any hits to back you up on the first page. So if 50 publications said so, they must be publications google has never heard of. Come to think of it, no major 3d fighters were released this year anyway.....
Other notable games that come to mind are Unreal Championship, NARC, Area 51 (PS2) and the widely acclaimed arcade treasures collections.
This would be the same Unreal Championship festooning the secondhand bins in Blockbusters up and down the county, would it? And the same Area 51 getting "meh, another shooter" reviews left, right and centre? Thought so.
