Fucking earthquakes. I was in the 5th floor of this Akihabara building and it was shaking like crazy. Now I'm shaking...

I heard a story from a couple that was travelling outside Tokyo in the more rural areas. People would hide behind the hotel counter because they were afraid to speak English (or to foreigners).t

It's true, Saturn. Although I haven't seen it go to the extent of hiding behind a counter, they do try to avoid you at times. Especially outside of Tokyo. When we traveled to the more rual areas, people would go out of their way not to be near you. Sitting on a train, most will not sit next to you. Even in Tokyo, the people will not make eye contact with you unless they are dealing directly with you, such as a waitress or hotel personnel. But if they are proving a service, they are super nice. Other than that, they pretty much ignore foreigners...

I just had drinks at the Park Hyatt New York Bar, where Bill Murray shot Lost in Translation. Pretty swanky...

That's normal and considered polite in Japan. It's rude to stare at people you have no business with.

Back home now. It was a great trip and I'd recommend everyone try to visit Japan at least once.

The view from atop the Park Hyatt Hotel, New York Bar. Really a mind-blowing city...

Well, I was in New York City last year, and Tokyo this year. I can't definitively say which city is better. They each have their own unique aspects.

So Geoff, when did you visit NYC and Tokyo?

I can see the hotel I use when I'm there. And the park full of huge fuck off spiders.

Cool view. Is that Yoyogi or Shinjuku Gyoen? We walked through both, but it's hard to tell where I'm looking from those photos...

It's the Sunroute Higashi Shinjuku. Great view at meal times.
