I have yet to run into a musician who will cite her as being a major influence on their own music. I am 100% sure that most of her fame (or rather notoriety) was derived from her lifestyle rather than her music.

Adele was saying she saw her has a big influence during some interview on the radio the other day, she's pretty successful if you look at the worldwide chartings for her last album.

How many musicians do you run into? Not many I shouldn't think, and the one's you do run into probably share your enthusiasm for prog rock type bands like dream theater. Hardly a qualification by which to judge a completely different genre that you probably never take much interest in listening to.

She's just no way in the same league as Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin or Kurt Cobain when it comes to being iconic and influential.

Apart from hendrix, I say bullshit. That's just typical nostalgic 'oh they're legends and noone will ever touch them' crap, in the same way some people still say "keith moon was teh greatest drummah evah!"
I bet you don't even know half of janis joplin's music. If she were alive today and performing, some people would be saying similar things about her voice and style as they do about winehouse.
Kurt Cobain is iconic mostly because he was a heroin addict and so was elevated to legendary status. Jimi Hendrix, well he's obviously not a fair comparison to most artists since his influence in the world of music is absolutely massive, and he truly is a legend.
