You asked him a question which, to many, relates to religious beliefs. He answered by telling you he is not a religious person. Regardless of whether most/many atheists believe in the soul, he certainly implied he did not. There's a difference between a lack of belief and a belief in absence of something, memph. I don't think that most atheists say "I believe there's no god." They simply say "there's no evidence, so I don't have a belief." That's a huge difference.
