True that. 16 colours? HAH
I like this thread if only because gothboy posted at least 3 times about importing a japanese DS for a different case colour. I think that this is very interesting and I shall be considering his suggestions carefully.

Huh, since when was a Nintendo console backwards compatible? The DS is the first. If that's a "letdown" then why so?

I can't believe that you people are actually fighting over a glorified gameboy.

Agreed :icon14:
I haven't seen the PSP yet, so I can't really judge about it. I do have the DS and am very happy with it. Some people just stare themselves blind on graphics and don't think about the quality and fun of the games. The only two things the PSP has that the DS doesn't are current generation graphics (vs somewhere in-between previous and current generation graphics) and out of the box media playback capabilities (vs buying it as a $50 add-on).
Since I don't care about the graphics if a game is fun and I can't be arsed to risk bad eyesight from watching movies on a 10cm screen I don't see why the PSP would "obviously be better" than the DS.

Err. The Gameboy colour, gameboy advance, and GBA SP all kept backwards compatability.. FULL backwards compatability, all the way back to the original gameboy.
DS 'uhh, yeah, you can play games designed for the GBA, but only singleplayer stuff.
They fucked up, frankly. WiFi Tetris? Yes plz.
You can look at the DS two ways, a ballsy innovation or a desperate attempt to regain some market. I honestly thought it was the former for a good while, but after toying with it, it becomes apparent that it's the latter, which is a shame.

To be honest, all you even need for touch-screen mobile gaming is Bejewelled.

I actually wrote to Nintendo about that a few weeks ago.
My letter:
". . . Also, I was wondering, the cartridge slot for the GBA
can hold and play BOTH GBA and GB games. Why cant the
cartridge slot on the DS made for GBA games play GB
games as well? Thanks."
Their response:
"Hello and thank you for contacting Nintendo,
In order for the Nintendo DS to be able to play the older Game Boy
Color and standard Game Boy games (like the Game Boy Advance SP), it would need to contain the hardware required to process the 8-bit programs. There just is not the space inside the system to include these extra units.
If the necessary hardware was added, the cost of the system would likely have to been increased. In addition, some other feature would have likely to be removed.
For more details on the Nintendo DS, please visit our website at
http://www.nintendo.com . . ."
So I suppose there you have it. Perhaps someone more technically inclined can comment.

We all know in 6 months time Ninty will release a new version of the DS with better looks and features... So no worries.

"ninty" :lol:
<1 year and a new version? if that's true, they just pissed off a ton of suckers that purchased the original version. they're openly admitting either:
a) PSP is a threat to their being "king of the handhelds", which is understandable since that's the only leg Nintendo is left standing on.
b) it was a flawed product to begin with and now come the fixes.

How long did the SP take to come out? It would probably be around that time they would release it.
The DS... It DOE look cheap... It plays great, but it always has looked cheap, even more so against the PSP... Its just the DS has much better gameplay.

No, outdated, n64-era kiddie remakes aren't good gameplay.

What, your laughing at the DS for remaking classic games? At least they are "classic" to begin with, unlike the tripe on the psp. The only good game the psp had going for it is metal gear and its a card game ffs.
BTW, not all DS games out/coming out are "remakes".

Has anyone ecer mentioned how big a hypocrite you are? One minute you're bitching because a game doesn't have a full-featured hair engine or a billion polys per finger, then you're praising a shitty, underpowered system for lack of originality with games.

Or maybe your just reading into the bandwagon a little to much?
I would rather have a game with good gameplay over a game with good graphics any day.
Maybe, just maybe, next time a bandwagon comes along you will learn to look into things a little more before jumping on, yeah?

I also think too many people here are obsessed with HAVING to compare the 2 in some ultra-stupid modern update of the "SNES vs. Genesis / Quake vs. Unreal / Mario vs. Sonic" wars of old.
I've not seen a PSP yet, but I'm sure it's a great system, doing something completely different to the DS...
Of course you have to compare the two. Most people will only buy one handheld, so you have to pick which one you think is better.

I have no problems with Mario 64.
I never really played the original, so I'm loving it.
The hypocricy with a lot of you people is that if Sony never released the PSP, the DS would be "the most awesome handheld ever" instead of a "desperate attempt to regain some market". If Sony hadn't shown PS2 quality graphics, then everyone would be impressed by the fact that Nintendo was able to squeeze better-than-N64 graphics out of a handheld. The fact that the PSP does exist doesn't make the DS any less of a fun handheld.
Oh and the DS isn't supposed to be the PSP's direct competitor. The GBA 2 (or whatever it's going to be called) will be. In terms of "gaining market", the DS is Nintendo's attempt to access new market areas, rather than expanding on their existing GBA market. That's what the GBA2 is for.
Nintendo has always been very clear about the fact that the DS isn't for the "hardcore gamer", it's for those people that enjoy their weekly hour of The Sims or Tetris. Those people that play a videogame once in a while when they're bored, not for the people that finish a new videogame every week or spend 6 hours a day playing Halo 2 or World of Warcraft online. It's supposed to be a simple, accessible "toy" that'll appeal to the "casual" gamer. I think Nintendo have succeeded quite well at that.

Agreed. I just couldn't say it that way
Not much on the gba2 ATM though, hopefully E3 some time...
With nintendos hand helds the yahve always took one step behind their current console really.
In the snes days we had nes graphics. If the n64 days we had better nes-like graphics (colour), then i nthe cube days or there abours we had snes graphics, and now we have slightly better 64 graphics. And those DO please my eye. I love the way my DS games look, and lets face it, the only BIG difference is the lack of filtering.
What would happen if they did a one up on sony with the gba2, and made it better than ps2, almost cube like graphics? People would still moan "nintendo dont have the games" where as in my eyes, nintendo have ALL the games, its just their market sucks in the UK.

i never really liked that line that Nintendo fed about how DS isnt a competitor to the P$P or whatever.
just because you say something is so, doesnt mean it is. anytime people are consistently choosing between one product (DS) or the other (PSP)...those two products are competing.
