Another FAQ error:

net_serverdownload "2" (0 == no auto-redirect support, 1 == auto-redirect to website, 0 == autodownload from link)

Should say:

net_serverdownload "2" (0 == no auto-redirect support, 1 == auto-redirect to website, 2 == autodownload from link)

This stuff really needs to be fixed ASAP.

Also, the files need to be seperated by semi colons, not commas:

net_serverDlTable "q4base/filename1.pk4,base/filename2.pk4,base/filename3.pk4

(including the q4base fix needs semi-colons -- should be:

net_serverDlTable "q4base/filename1.pk4;q4base/filename2.pk4;q4base/filename3.pk4"

Yeah I put that FAQ together really quick. I was sitting there thinking to myself, "Was it commas, or semi-colons?" The other thing was a typo. I'll fix it once I get home. Aaaaaaaaand, 2box4 was uploaded as a .zip file. The upload script detects such things, hence an auto-download link is not displayed. I'm kind of wondering what I should do in this kind of situation. Here I can of course just change it to pk4, but should I require all mod files to be pk4? If we start getting tons of uploads I'm pretty sure we don't want to go through and change this on every file we get. Or maybe we do. Probably so.

Simply renaming .zip into .pk4 is not possible because than it is a .pk4 in a .pk4. I zipped the file because in the upload form i read ".zip file" :> But if direct download and autodownload use the same file, you should limit upload only as .pk4.

I upload 2box4 as .pk4, may someone can delete the .zip file?

Well the thing is I don't only want auto-download files. That's why we have the patch up there. Yeah, you must have uploaded it just before I changed that notice.

If it were my project, I would put only pk4s in the advertised pk4 download folder:
http://q4files.escapedturkey.net/quake4/pk4s/q4base/

zips or patches or whatever else can go into a seperate folder.

something like
http://q4files.escapedturkey.net/quake4/patches
and http://q4files.escapedturkey.net/quake4/maps
and http://q4files.escapedturkey.net/quake4/mods

Then yes, you may be holding a zip in the maps folder and its extracted pk4 in the pk4s folder, thereby duplicating your storage requirements. This is one argument for mappers simply distributing the pk4s only. Many people will only get maps by server autodl, so the pk4 is the only thing that will be around on most peoples drives anyway.

Once again we're back the the original conversation about - what is the scope of this project? If its only for q4server autodownload mirroring, then allow only pk4s to be uploaded. Or also zips, and somebody has to go extract the zip to put the pk4 in the autodl location.

This project should only be for .pk4 files. Anything else should have its own project. :icon31:

If there is a patch or something, we can manually put those in.

Otherwise, .pk4 uploads only -- in my opinion.

As always, it will be altered accordingly. I agree with you. Manually putting other stuff in will not be too hard at all. It just has to be brought to our attention first, perhaps through the new pm system?

I suggest putting the auto-download instructions on the front page, and where it lists the files below, have another column (in the middle) with the real filename -- the actual name of the file with the pk4 extension. Have the real file name link directly to the file itself so a player/admin can click on the file and immediately download it without having to go to the description page.

That would make it a lot easier on admins to config their servers and grab the files quickly. The less clicking the easier and more appealing the site will be to others. :icon31:

I don't know if anyone has time to do this - but it would be great if some one or some people could go through sites such as filefront, fileplanet, etc. and download a bunch of the Quake 4 maps and upload them to q4files. The more maps we host, the more the community will start utilizing what is offered and start to contribute as well.

Something I've found out that you guys should be made aware of. The Redirector doesn't appear to like upper case names for the PK4's. Make sure all of the pk4's are lowercase or it won't work. It doesn't matter how identical you set them up in the server.cfg file it refused to work for me with uppercase letters.

When i have time i would upload some files, but currently you dont know if authors will update the maps with addon.conf and since the patch is beta you dont know if they change something in final patch.

Freak: Thanks for realizing this.

Hex: We're just still debating this.

Iluvmyquake4: We are planning on just uploading all the maps we can find, once Lenard gets around to it.

Lenard: And who the hell is going to be doing that?? Not I.

Good advice. I believe it also has a problem with file names with spaces and/or underscores.

The upload page should have something like:

Any file names with non-alphabetical and/or non numerical characters will be rejected, including file names with capital letters, spaces, symbols, and/or underscores.

Underscores and dashes are fine. Spaces are not. I tested this on my server already.

There really should have been more documentation on this thing so we could have built the site around it instead of changing it every time.

I have gotten a few to upload, but now all I get is this.
FTP upload has failed!

Well that's odd. I just uploaded a test file and it worked fine. You might want to try it again. What kind of information are you giving it? Anything weird? Is there anything odd about the file?

Could you maybe add a download counter to each file? It'd be nice to track which are the more popular maps, etc.

Thanks for all your hard work on the site KMG!

I'm happy to start uploading files now, but none of them have addon.conf. I'm assuming since it doesn't affect the ability to autodownload (just which files you need to play on the server using those files) I should go ahead and start uploading. Someone chime in if I shouldn't.

What also would be helpful is to contact the author's of each map and ask them to add that file. Then have them upload it to the Q4files site or once they offer the revised version, upload it to Q4files.

wviperw: Thanks.

I've been looking into this, but it could prove to be a little more complicated than it would seem at first glance, mostly because the fileserver would have to access the webserver database for an accurate count, which I'm looking into for upload speed and disk space/bandwidth optimizations anyway. Other than that this would just be a matter of writing a cool parser I believe :)

CashMoney/riddla: I'm not up on any of this type of news at all. I wish I was, I just have not been very big on the q4 community until now. If somebody could find some decisive information about these matters, or tell me where to look, that would be a big help. I mean hell, I didn't even know how to set up an autodownload path correctly until you guys set me straight.

I know we could easily be getting more uploads if somebody just looked at this section of the forum and uploaded according to release threads, and that person would be me if I were not now officially on 56k.

Anyway, is anybody actually using the site for autodownloads yet? Quite curious.

Yes, but here is an update: We are without internet and are now running on 56k aol that we got from a gas station. Our last thirty days in this apartment ends tomarrow as in the 7th and we have no where to go because no 5 bedroom houses have come on to the renting market here for the last two months. We have decided to go for a four bedroom, but we need some time. So, you can expect to see us forumside but as for updates, it may be a week or so.
