There seems to be a lot of speculation in that article about what his bill is "going to" be. Nothing has happened yet. I'm sure there are associated costs to update the electric infrastructure in order to measure the amount of power they're buying back from solar customers. Either way doesn't the Tesla Powerwall bypass the need to sell back what your generating because it just stores it for your home to use later?

Again, price decreases efficiency pmw. The more you tack on the more your paying pmw. The cost of 2 powerwalls is around the 7 - 10k alone depending what country youre in / how much work youre willing to do yourself with a 10 year life span.

Thinking of these roofs though, if the price difference between a new roof and a solar roof isnt that much then the market for this could be found in replacement roofs / new builds

I would think this is mostly aimed at new homes, as demolishing an existing roof to replace it with a solar roof is probably too costly

I looked it up on the Tesla site. Two of em (needed to go off the grid for a 3 bedroom home), including installation costs, will set you back 12,000 USD

I'd imagine any roof that's nearing the end of its lifespan could be replaced with this system. I know my roof's shingles are rated to last 30 years, and they were installed back in the 80s, so maybe in a few years I'll upgrade.

You can install shingles on top of existing shingles rather than tearing up the old ones, but it doesn't really save much money, because removing shingles from a roof while installing new ones is an inconsequential portion of the cost. If you have a metal roof, though, that may be another story.

Is that the complete set up (with panels / converter etc) or just the 2 units ?, when i looked up pricing they were 3500usd in America minus installation each or 4500k in the UK. Then the 10 year life expectancy youre talking about 1k just for the powerwall units per year or 250 quarterly. Its just too much overhead with the added risk of not getting the desired performance when you coonsider the powerwall unit cost alone is pretty much the same price as a dirty burner.

Then youll need to get max efficiency from your panels to fill those beasts up which could be difficult if youre in the winter and trying to run the heating.

Could be worthwhile in a better climate, just somewhere in the UK during winter with clouds and shorter days is gonna be difficult me thinks.
