i wonder sometimes what actually goes on in the minds of guys like Kissinger, Reagan, Thatcher, Blair etc when they realise that their decisions have led to kids getting their limbs blown off. like when Kissinger issued his infamous "anything that flies on anything that moves" order regarding the bombing of Cambodia: did he rationalise it as an evil done in the service of the great good of defeating communism? or was he just being a 'team player'? there must be some kind of rationalisation going on; these aren't just kids burning ants with a magnifying glass 'for a laugh' (neither is ISIS, for that matter)

I do the same wondering. These guys must be a special sort. I'd absolutely love to be able to look into brains and know what is going on here.

Western leaders have teams of people that are perfectly well capable of rationalizing such decisions for them.

the cabinet office must look like an episode of 24 when the bombing's going on: all those perfectly coiffed and deodorised 'company men' in identical grey suits, all telling the guy with his finger on the trigger that he's doing what's best for the [insert demonym here] people...
