Or maybe I don't waste my time reading tabloids.

I recognize the name, but couldn't tell you who she is, what she sings, or why I should care. Feel free to tell me about something she's done to warrant my attention.

Tabloids? She's a multi-grammy winning recording artist. You don't need to have a prescription to a crappy newspaper to know who she is. I don't particularly care for her or her music either, but not knowing who she is just bleeds ignorance. You must be really detached from society werldhed.

I couldn't name a single artist who has won a grammy for probably the past 10 years. They're pretty meaningless awards and I don't follow them. Face it, some people just don't care about or follow pop music. I'm sure there are plenty more artists I've never heard of as well. There's a difference between ignorance and lack of interest.

You've got a Simpsons avatar as your icon yet you're seemingly clueless about popular culture. I'll just let you ponder the irony of that for a bit.

I don't find it at all ironic.
Just because I don't know any song by some random pop singer means I can't enjoy the Simpsons? We all pick and choose what interests us. The garbage coming out of the music industry doesn't happen to interest me, so I don't invest time in it.
Guess what... I also don't know any of Lady Gaga's songs. Horrors!

I don't know why I would have known anything about Amy Winehouse unless I actively looked into the music gossip section of the news.

Exactly. You don't need to like someone just to know they exist. I can only name a single song of Winehouse's and have "invested" absolutely nothing into her or indeed pretty much every pop artist out there, but you'd have to dig your head pretty far in the sand to not even know who she is. More likely is he's pretending he has never heard of her just to make himself look all high-brow and culturally superior in a quake3world thread. Either way, it's pretty idiotic and I demand you apologise to everyone immediately for the shame you have brought us.

Fair enough. My apologies. :)

I did say I recognized the name, and I knew she was somehow connected to music. I'm pretty sure the reason I knew her name was from Q3W. That is, I see a thread, click on it, realize I'm not interested and close the thread. I couldn't tell you anything else -- what she looks like, where she's from, etc.

I'm positive I've never heard her name mentioned outside of Q3W, though. Lady Gaga, on the other hand, I have heard of, from the news, radio, or casual conversation. None of my friends have ever mentioned Winehouse (unlike Gaga, or even Katy Perry, who both came up in conversation at a party last weekend). I don't know any songs by any of these ladies, but some I've heard of and some I haven't. I guess that just illustrates the difference between a famous celebrity and a nobody.

Pretty shocking to see the way she looked in her older vids, and she had a great voice. Emphasis on HAD. Cocaine is a hell of a drug.

I thought it sounded very limited in range and somewhat monotone. This is what I gathered from the 40 seconds of youtube videos I watched to learn just who the fuck this person even was :olo:

I want Michael and Freddie back.

I've only ever heard of her because of a previous thread or post or something that Drum made before. Other than that, nothing.

I agree too but still find it mighty sad someone so young departs this life, known to any or not and apparently in such good place :tear: (industry wise)

I'd not say she was legendary or anything like that, but I'm a fan of Etta James, etc. Winehouse reminded me of her.

I don't understand the Winehouse worshipping in this thread. While she was trend setting for the mainstream charts, her music was hardly revolutionary. I have yet to run into a musician who will cite her as being a major influence on their own music. I am 100% sure that most of her fame (or rather notoriety) was derived from her lifestyle rather than her music.

That's not to say she wasn't talented, because she obviously was. She's just no way in the same league as Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin or Kurt Cobain when it comes to being iconic and influential.
