edit:
and if we are talking about Human Revolution here, then I find it highly amusing that Brisk seems to just as easily call that game GOTY material as he calls Rage's failure to deliver. Months before the release of both games.

Except a preview written by someone who has physically played RAGE describes the game as basically being shit.
lol yeah. One preview from a single someone.
I read another preview from another someone who was really enthusiastic about what Rage had on offer. So there you go. 50/50.
Preview says fuck all.

Shit dude, you "got" me.
k so I pushed ahead, and got to see the outdoors. It's not as bad as the first "indoor" mission. But it still looks funny in some way because even though it utilizes some fancy direct X11 filters, alot of the world textures are low res with low polygon count. It's like at some point they decided to upgrade to dx11 but never bothered to run 3dmax again. I guess it's better than delaying the game another 3 years.

From what I understand, it's a preview build, and a lot of textures are missing, or just placeholders.

Not judging the quality of the graphics as a standalone. From the video footage I've scene, it seems to have a nice look to it, but you can't judge until you have it running, as you have done. My point is that I've seen pictures of both side by side, and the comparison just can't be made.

DX:HR is artistically beautiful. The amount of detail in the environments/offices is insane really and the art direction really shines at times. The poor textures are mainly just for the faces of NPCs really, since a lot of the environment textures are actually very sharp. It's not a pretty game technically, but it has character and obviously a lot of care has gone into making the world look unique.

Duke Nukem on the other hand looks just as you'd expect it. The player models/textures may look sharper, but never once do you feel like you're actually immersed in a living, breathing world. Comparing them on an art perspective is like comparing Universal Soldier to Blade Runner.

Still, you can carry a turd in DNF.

Duke Nukem 3d (Along with Wolf 3d, and Doom) kicked off an interest in computing for me. Having to deal with IRQ's and DOS was certainly a stepping stone into my current career. This is the only reason why I even bother caring about DFN.

If DNF provides the style of fun that Serious Sam brought, I'll pick it up. Otherwise, I'm sure it'll be terrible.

I never played Deus Ex. I can't remember why this is.

Expect it to be a bargain bucket title in 3 months
I might pick it up then...but all the reviews etc have been horrible and people whose opinion I respect when it comes to games have said it's shit. Pity :(

Wow, that looks godawful.

Guess it's like the kotaku guy says; they promised us a functioning game, not a good one.

The thing I'm not sure about...

Do we not hold Gearbox accountable? Did they just get the IP, fill in the holes to make it a "game" and release what 3DRealms had? It seems like they could really done something great but went for a quick cash out.

Absolutely accountable in my eyes. Sure, 85% or whatever of the game was made at 3D Realms and Shitych, but Queerbox also spent an additional 18 months or whatever "polishing" it and eventually releasing it. They believed in the game and the franchise and failed to deliver, basically.

I see that the game is number 1 in the UK sales charts, so there's obviously still a demand (or morbid curiosity) for Duke Nukem. Assuming it sells over the 2 million or so they needed, then eventually they might make a new Duke game from scratch, without any misguided "obligation" to release a game like DNF, which was obviously a 3D Realms production. Honestly, i'm not a fan of Gearbox at all and I hated Borderlands, despite the reception. I think they should just let it die already and release that fucking Aliens game (which will also probably be terrible, but again, it has an iconic brand associated with it)

Well, how about this. It says more than one random guy on an internet forum who's never played, seen or even associated with anyone who has, but feels he has the authority to make sweeping statements about the game content or motivation behind its creators.

Also, now hundreds of people have now pirated and played an early build of Deus Ex, and the reviews from people I've been reading say it's fucking amazing.

Basically, your opinion (the one you tout as fact) doesn't count because you've never played RAGE; that's all there is to it.

In Summary: You haven't played RAGE, you haven't met any of the designers, you have absolutely no insider knowledge of any kind, so you are in no position to make the ridiculous assumptions you've been making up until this point.

You can't do significant changes to a game in 18 months, especially if it's a totally disastrous piece of shit that was mismanaged from day one. DNF is a failure of management and game direction and for this reason it's not something you can toss polish on and expect it to turn out well. No amount of polish can fix a piece of furniture with wood rot.

The only way Gearbox could have released DNF in such a way that it would actually be good is if they scrapped 90% of it and rebuilt everything else. Clearly not something that can be achieved in 18 months. They probably spent most of that time trying to make sense of the chaotic mess they were handed, not doing any actual polish since that would just be a waste of resources.

You can build an entire game in 18 months though, so that's not really an excuse. They had enough time needed to tear it down and build it again from scratch.

Look at Call of Duty. They make a new one every three weeks.

It doesn't take 18 months to come to the conclusion that DNF should never have been released in the first place.

I still think they had to release it. If only to show just how much Broussard fucked everything up. Gearbox had 18 months, but I very much doubt they did anything to make it worse. Unless releasing it makes it worse, which it kind of does.

I really don't see how this could have played out differently. Who knows what they paid 3D Realms, but they must have been out a decent chunk of change by the time they realized that it was a complete disaster. Releasing it in the state it's in is really just an attempt to recoup the money they basically threw away by purchasing the IP. It's just a shame that the fans, who don't wait for reviews or heed the warnings given by them, are the ones who pay for it.

Sure, they could have thrown out the project entirely and started from scratch, but I'm guessing they just didn't have the resources to do so. I don't see them shelving the project until they do, when it still has the potential to be a revenue stream. <insert bit about this being a business after all>

Not every game has to be a tripple A hit. Once you saw past its OBVIOUS flaws, it was bloody great fun.

All I can say is that if a Mod Team comes along and remedies this product and restores the "true Duke Spirit" ala the "Classic Doom 3 mod" in less than 18 months, Gearbox will be nearly as much of a target for mockery as 3DRealms...
