According to Mona Eltahawy, the US gives Mubarak's government $1.3 billlion worth of firearms to ensure the government has guns while the population doesn't...which helps maintain the autocracy.Nightshade wrote:Explain or be called a retard.Captain Mazda wrote:America's foreign policy at work.

and yet here they are rising up against that autocracy without those firearms... (also: so now you're saying an armed populace keeps tyranny at bay? i hope you let gramps know about your change of heart on this issueGONNAFISTYA wrote:According to Mona Eltahawy, the US gives Mubarak's government $1.3 billlion worth of firearms to ensure the government has guns while the population doesn't...which helps maintain the autocracy.
Not at all. I firmly believe that if the populance had guns we'd be talking about a bloodbath and thousands dead, instead of a few people getting run over by cars, horses and camels.seremtan wrote:and yet here they are rising up against that autocracy without those firearms... We don't give them $1.3 billion "worth of firearms", it's that much money with provisions that some portion of it be spent on American weapons. I saw no American rocks of molotov cocktails in the video that Obsidian posted, and the other vid didn't show an American police van running those people down. Also, the Egyptian Army has stated numerous times that they will not fire on protesters. So, I'm still waiting to hear how this is American foreign policy in action.GONNAFISTYA wrote:

The $1.3 billion figure is the total military aid that the US gives Egypt annually, including firearms. I'm not saying American support turned Mubarak into a doucebag and I'm not blaming US foreign policy for what happened and is happening. So you can calm the fuck down, Randy. TBH I'm not sure what Spazda's point really was, but I thought I was attempting to answer your question. Like I said...ask Spazda what he meant.Nightshade wrote:

Have we supported Mubarak for a long time? Yes, but I don't see how this makes the US responsible for him being a douchebag in this specific case.
CAIRO—The Egyptian vice president says President Hosni Mubarak is stepping down.
CAIRO—The recently appointed general secretary of Egypt's ruling National Democratic Party of beleaguered President Hosni Mubarak said on Friday he had resigned, saying Egypt needed new parties.
“It's a resignation from the position and from the party,” Hossam Badrawi told private al-Hayat TV.
“The formation of new parties in a new manner that reflects new thinking is better for society now at this stage.”
Hundreds of thousands of Egyptian protesters waved flags, cried, cheered and embraced in celebration, chanting “we have brought down the regime.”

whatever comes out of this in egypt will only be 'good' if it's considered to be in US interests. sounds like you never got the memo from centcomandyman wrote:all the egyptians here in Doha were honking their horns all night... kind of annoying but I was honking for the hell of it
What was funny is when i picked up the civilian equivalent of a general from the airport and he asked me what was going on in Egypt (a week ago), i ALMOST almost said, "don't know much about it, just what I've read on q3w"seremtan wrote:whatever comes out of this in egypt will only be 'good' if it's considered to be in US interests. sounds like you never got the memo from centcomandyman wrote:all the egyptians here in Doha were honking their horns all night... kind of annoying but I was honking for the hell of it
