u mad?...
Good choices, Sammys are great TVs. You should be happy with your purchase. But why the 5 series and not the ultra-thin 7 or 8 series?

The 5 series is nice, if that's all you can afford.

I dunno... I played my xbox on a plasma and the trailing images were god awful, I much prefer my LCD... On the plasma you could barely make out anything on screen when you were moving. It's possible though that it was just my friends plasma that was cheap... It was a few years ago...

The 7's and 8's are top of the line is all. Which one is your PC monitor? :D

My 32" 6 series Sammy at 1920x1080 is fucking awesome to game on.

I've been researching HDTVs a bit and was planning on getting one over the next 2 months or so. With all the discussion of advantages and disadvantages of both plasma and LCD, it's really hard to figure out what's best for you. So far, I'm leaning towards a 42" Samsung or Panasonic LCD. It'll be used in a somewhat small room with large windows/sliding doors. Not looking for anything overly massive, I think 42" should be more than sufficient for a viewing distance of ~3-4 meters? Glare is possibly the biggest factor for me due to how exposed the room is, hence LCD instead of plasma.

The only thing I'm not sure on is the size. The consensus seems to be that for 42" and above you should be looking at plasmas and for 36" and below, LCDs. Now I'm not sure if I should get 1 size smaller or something. Any merit to this?

Also, what's the deal with refresh rate? I get the difference between 50/60 and 100/120 due to power frequency differences, but I've seen some TVs advertised at 600 Hz. What's that about? Also, 100 Hz should be sufficient for gaming, yes?

1. You should base the size of your TV on viewing distance. A good place to start is around 4 to 7 inches per foot away from the TV. 4 inches per foot for low definition viewing, up to 7 inches per foot for HD viewing.

2. Get the Samsung over the Panasonic. You'll be happy you did.

3. Usually Plasma TVs are larger and you can't find them in sizes under 42". You also won't find many LCD TVs larger than 60". For my main viewing TV I would still get a plasma. They genuinely have a truer black (resulting in more vibrant colors) and more fluid motion. I also haven't found glare to be any more of an issue with my Plama than my LCDs. Though my Plasma does have a glare shield.

4. 60, 120, 240 and 600Hz are how TVs are typically sold these days. Basically, the higher the number the more fluid the picture. I'm not positive, but I don't believe anyone even makes a 600Hz LCD or LED TV.

Unless he actually does go for plasma, in which case it's exactly the opposite.

About size: yes there are general rules about screen size vs viewing distance, and these can be helpful. But there is one rule that every HDTV owner will live by when possible: GET THE BIGGEST MOTHERFUCKING QUALITY SET THAT YOU CAN. Obviously if you're just trying to populate a breakfast nook and whatnot, go dinky I guess...but I shudder at the thought of anything below a 46" screen size. On Modern plasmas, you've got to be sitting almost on top of the set to notice the pixels. LCDs...dunno, haven't owned one in awhile.

Always err on the side of bigness or you will regret it later. Once you see some different screen sizes in person, it's easily sorted about how big to go. Re-arrange the furniture, knock down closet wall or two...just get the bigger set

I've had a Panasonic 42" plasma for 6years and 7 months and never had a drama.

I am most satisfied with my decision (after considerable research).

I also paid big dollars way back then, in the order of 3 months salary, so I won't be replacing it anytime soon.

My old man (I am told 'cause I haven't visited for a while) just bought a 56" LED :smirk:

if the room, as it is now, has a cozy viewing area with 27" 4:3 screen, and it has been proven to be adequate for your needs, a 42" 16:9 widescreen will be equal in horizontal dimension to the 27"

and of corce there''ll be those extra sides on there so yea bigger but just the sides.

and for example if u have a 36" 4:3 tele, a 46" 16:9 are equel

hope that helped!
