So are twitter messages always publicly visible for everyone? So if I'd twitter "Busy jerking off" then the whole internet-capable world would know I'm strangling the one eyed snake?

Unless you mark your updates as protected (so following you requires you authorize the person, and the updates aren't publically visible), then yeah.
Twitter is more just a generalized messaging system. It can be
used for microblogging, or it can be used for anything that needs a messaging system.
As an example, I was playing with some
nzb-related software in January when I changed ISPs. The end result was that I gave it it's own
twitter account so that I could follow what it was queuing up for download (I just unprotected that -- normally only I could see the updates that were being made there).

is like a localized combination of twitter, facebook and a mobilized UBB (yeah, my kind of peeps!). So strange to instantly recognize faces from local coffee shops in this attn.whr.-ing context. Some mildly funny anecdotal thoughts, nothing really quote-worthy though.

That's largely the point.

I know, and it's just a bit crap IMO. The only difference is you don't have to use your (real?) name on there.

The social networking industry is not sure why twitter works. They can't figure it out. Some VC's threw $50 million at it two weeks ago and twitter wasn't looking for capital at the time. Weird.

It's not unheard of MKJ, VCs as he puts it, may invest on the prospect of future returns. Given outside stock market returns of late, this prospect is made more tantalizing for some.

True - but they generally don't invest when the company:
a) has no revenue
b) isn't asking for equity funds

Used to be a light myspace user, but didn't like the excessive pointless bulletins.

Ok, I found a use for Twitter. It's a RSS feed + textmessage thingy in one.
I'm using the Tweetie app on my iPhone and Mac. It refreshes every few minutes with news from accounts I follow like CNN and the NYT (also oprah and britney spears). Friends and collegues can send messages through public messages or private direct messages.
News spreads around fast and you can search on tags for certain topics. I avoid users who micro-blog about their daily boring shit.
This site could get an Q3W twitter-account and tweet breaking news like....member birthdays.

I've had an account for a few weeks to follow quakelive and concert announcements. I don't use it to publish and only check it a couple of times a day.

Twitter....for vain fagg0ts trying to relive the glory days of elementary school when their teacher told them that they were "special".
Anyone who tweets/twats on a regular basis is a small-dicked narcissist.
