I wish I had the resolve to make a decision like that right now, because science education in America (and particularly in my district) is going to get even worse before it gets better. But I've finally actualized my goal of buying a house, setting up my own little piece of suburban America, etc...and going back to finish my PhD would require me losing all of this. If you're in a stage in your life where you are relatively 'free' and not tied down to anyone/anything permanent, than the decision you made was the decision that definitely should have been made.

See if I had a mortgage, family commitments or indeed any particular ties to this region this decision would have been a lot harder than it was. For once, being single and having loose financial commitments has served me well.

Ironically I'll probably end up working in or around Sheffield again, and I left there deliberately to avoid doing the end-of-degree stagnation thing I've seen so many people do. At least I'll be going back there for a proper job if I do go.

my advice , and its good advice, get money, as much as you can.

bleh, bust your fucking ass and get something better. if you keep moving from a shit job to another, sooner or later your degree will be worthless.

pretty damn good if you manage to get yourself into a private high school or a high end university. the pay is awesome (or so the rumors were when i was back in uni), and from what I gather the education system isn't turning upside down, unlike the US.

good pay, good lifestyle, awesome weather, golfing almost year round .

teaching the ankle-bracelet crowd will garner a wage in the neighborhood of like 80K / year in Bailey, CO.

Last day tomorrow, thank god.

Because I've quit and the only other guy with knowledge on our team is working on a deployment of Altiris, that leaves 2 people to do the regular team work, one of which is my boss.

Last thing I left him doing today was thumping his fist on the desk and screaming WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH THIS THING as he was trying to map a network drive directly to a .XLS file.....

I've been kinda scared off big companies now as a lot of my frustration stemmed from being a tiny cog in a big machine.

Wahey, I got a contractor position on silly money.

I'll probably last like a week, but I'm being paid direct and it's pretty much double my previous salary.

Yay indeed!

The good: Great Pay, interesting environment, boss seems quite sane
The bad: An obscene mishmash of servers, workstations, subcompanies, branches, connections and software. About 50 servers, many on NT4. Lotus AND Exchange (haha oh wow)
The Ugly: I have to 'hit the ground running' and perform 2nd and 3rd-Line support for all of this. Server room reminiscent of bomb site. 80 mile round trip unless I get a room sorted.

In a way I relish it because it feels like an opportunity. As long as they're actually committed to developing the systems up to an acceptable standard (and from what I gathered, they are) then there's a lot of very interesting projects I could be involved in.

Citrix up to date
ITIL implementation
New helpdesk system

That'd be sweet as.

that's a good thing then. updating the clients and server farm should be fairly easy. when we did it, it took about 24 man hours to be 100% again. that's if they want it done...

It appears I'm about to become the Domino admin for the company, presumably remaining on contract (I don't know what I'd say if they offered me permanent... the security means little to me and it'd effectively be a pay cut, hmm). While my first reaction to Notes/Domino is 'eugh', I don't think I've got any reason to say no.
