Im sure he was some stupid, cocky, loud, annoying nigger. You know, The way most black women are.

BTW, I am not racist, There is a difference between a black person and a nigger imo.

Funny you mention GH & Fender's posts about a loud woman in a theater. It's yet another example of things that black people love to say about themselves, but white people aren't allowed to mention without being racists.

You've stated your point time and time again -- there is inherent racism in society, some of it is overt and some is below the surface. And I agree with that.

But how do you fix that - by telling people they can't say what is on their minds? They can't point out what they themselves feel isn't quite fair?

They can't complain when affirmative action kicks them in the nuts, because black people have gotten worse in the past? I don't think that's a good lens to view the situation through.

Is the Aboriginal Television Network racist?

A nigger imo is a lazy, ignorant, uneducated, foolish person. Their race has nothing to do with whether they are a nigger or not in my eyes.

Not to defend the comment about lynchings, which is over the top in any context, but I think its possible to look at this without invoking all sorts of deeply ingrained racial beliefs on the part of Richards -

The guy hasn't done shit in the public eye since Seinfeld - he knows this as well as anyone. He's human, and even though he's a performer who should be able to handle it, it is probably stinging to your own pride and self-respect to have people heckling you about not being funny, etc. If, for whatever reason, his mood was already such that he was down about things and these comments pushed him over the edge, I think it is not an uncommon human response to go after whoever is insulting you with whatever you think will sting them the most - whether you really believe it or not. His tirade may have been a way for him to say what he felt would conjure up the same amount of 'hurt' at the people who hand stung him by pointing out he was a bit washed up. They pointed out a truth that hurt to him - so he, going to an extreme, did the same (a historical truth of sorts about the treatment of African Americans).

No, it doesn't justify it. Yes, it was way beyond what he should have done - normally comics are witty enough to slam their hecklers (I think someone told me that Seinfeld once said something to the effect of "hey, do I go pull sailors dicks out of your mouth while your trying to earn a living? to a guy heckling him). I think the reason he went so ballistic is because he was already insecure about his whole career at this point and this just reaffirmed it. So he lashed back with the most vile and inappropriate insult he could think of.

can't say that's the actual reason - but i think it is important to realize that making a comment this disgusting doesn't, necessarily, mean that he condones or believes what was said.

And just to make sure - no I'm not blaming the black people.

And yes, Richards was a fucking idiot to say things like that. If he was trying to make a comment about the (justifiable) stereotype regarding black people talking in theaters, etc., then that was the WRONG way to do it. If he was trying to make a point about the fact that the word nigger is just a word, and that we place all the connotation on it, then that was the WRONG way to do it.
He stepped on his dick with golf shoes, no two ways about it.

Racism = prejudice towards someones racial origin.
But prejudice occurs in other ways as well. What makes racism such a bad one if people are also prejudiced against the ricers, the homeless, the unemployed, the foreigners and many more groups? There's a difference between hating and not agreeing or liking stuff. kkk hates, other people disagree with the advantage blacks get for reasons which are totally unsuited for the choice. This is just an example since the same applies to other groups like foreigners/work, muslims and burkhas etc.

what happens if a black comic makes comments similar to the ones richards made about white people?

front page news or no?

It doesn't excuse richards, but i think we need to work towards consistency in how we look at racial attitudes on ALL sides and in ALL cultures - not just white vs. black.

There is reverse discrimination. I don't like any of it.

If you can't replace the word black with white without it causing a riot, something is wrong. i.e, White Entertainment Network; White Scholorship Fund; United Caucasion College Fund. All of these things would be accused of being racist. Why does making these same things for blacks only make them okay?

No, imo the racist part was GH wanting to call her nigger and fender using ALWAYS.

I never suggested that shutting people up is a solution to racism. People should definitely be able to talk about injustices but when blacks do it it's too in your face or all of a sudden the issue has to be changed to something else i.e. from lynching comments to affirmative action. let's deal honestly with one thing at a time.

How do you fix racism? Education and time I'd say.

And talk about a proper lens, I think most people who have posted in this thread are too clearly biased to accept their own perceptions on this issue. (what i mean is, racist people aren't generally trying very hard to understand the other side's perspective) I know you would probably agree that this would apply to racist blacks. Now see if it might apply to yourself as well.

I wholeheartedly support the right to talk about injustice but evoking lynchings to a black person is a strange way to go about that.

I don't know that BET implies racism - but I do think it implies there is a culture there that is their own - and the channel will cater to that culture. I don't think that is racist at all in and of itself - but if the broadcasting was such that it attacked other races, then you'd have a problem.

People who say 'white' in that respect are guilty of what they are criticizing a bit, since a 'white' entertainment network would ignore the diverse range of caucasian heritages.
