There are a couple of stations near me that don't take debit/credit, cash only. They are usually about 5c cheaper. Typically, a merchant has to pay 3% of the total transaction to MasterCard or Visa, especially small merchants, like mom'n'pop gas stations. So, if a gallon is $2.15, they'd normally pay about 6c per gallon to the CC company.
