I disabled automatic updates just after reading this thread.

MINUTES later I got the notification that new updates were ready and this was one of them.

Thing is it should have done it ages ago, it's upposed to update at 3:00am. Oddness.

FWIW I do have a legal install of XP as well, but unfortunately it's lying idle, waiting for me across the atlantic ocean.

prolly something stupid like "disable this and this service"
Well if you turn off autoupdates and when you goto their site and select custom, then you have nothing to worry about.

Did you get a deal on the OS?
Some shops will give the OS for half price if you buy some sort of hardware.
I think there's a certain amount of times you can re-install windows also. Now when I re-install, I have to call them.
It's either I exceeded the limit, or I don't have all the same hardware as when the first time I installed it.

aye but thats only prior.

last night i wanted to turn off my computer and it gave that "i first have install shit before i can shut down" message. so i thought well in that case you can restart first so i can see what youre installing.
after the restart it didnt install anything. i wanted to shut down again and it gave the same message.
so i guess it doesnt want me to know it installed this thing (i suppose it is that thing).
we'll see how it turns out tonite :o

The last definition update for the Defender Beta crapped out when I installed the validation tool. The fucker won't install, and just gives a cryptic error message so I get that damn "install first then shut down" message every time.

Me too

I am pretty sure I have a legit version, always upgraded, ever since 3.1. I still have the floppy discs somewhere......

I have a legit copy of XP Home, but MS still made me call them up when I tried last installing it.

Lame.

Yeah that 3 install rule is a pain

I wouldn't be so bad if they at least kept track of installs by CPU serial # or some unique ID on the mobo or something that *doesn't* change on a reformat.. it was all on the same comp so when the HD gets wiped, it counts as a new install. Bad memory, replaced a hard disk, etc etc.

Fookers. *grumble*

Mine only complained when I changed the whole system motherboard drives processor... the works.

Up until that it was just regular activation. Musta reinstalled 6 or 7 times in a 3 year period...
