I don't see what your problem is. There are many situations in which an IM is better than a phone call.

Trillian supports Jabber as well so you could use Trillian for work as well (if Jabber support is the only reason you use exodus). Even GoogleTalk works with Trillian through it's Jabber plugin.

Yeah that's sort of true. Best example is BitTorrent. Most people think it's a program like KaZaA while it's only a protocol.
