people take 35 minutes and risk carpal tunnel to have a conversation that would normally take 3 minutes using mouth and ears.
WHY?
With lab overcoat and chalkboard on, let's do some motherfucking math.
Well, first we need to solve for the hideously ugly unknown "X" (which is a known as well as an unknown--think about it, the best concepts are the most subtle, yet startlingly obvious) and then factor in the ability to shove half a bag of cupcake minis in the face while "chatting" without the risk of aspirating said chunks of the chocolately sex-substitute and I had my logical explanation very neatly explained using linear algebra and biostats.
I don't see what your problem is. There are many situations in which an IM is better than a phone call.
name one case, besides your inter-girlfriend overseas that no one's met irl, including her parents, you tea-bagging buttfuck?
I'm going to guess that you were being sarcastic this entire time but I will provide several good uses of IM.

You going to sit on the phone all day at work yapping like an idiot or would your coworkers appreciate you to be more discrete?

How often do your professors allow you to take a call in the middle of a boring class?

Do you call up your friend and phonetically tell then they need to go to http://www.dumpalink.com/files.php?file ... es&omg=wtf?

Are you able to upload a picture or song through your phone to the person on the other side while talking?

And what's so wrong with meeting new people on the internet? I talk to a lot of q3w peeps on IM but I'd never think of asking for a phone number to make an international call.

exodus for work (Jabber)
Trillian supports Jabber as well so you could use Trillian for work as well (if Jabber support is the only reason you use exodus). Even GoogleTalk works with Trillian through it's Jabber plugin.

irc is intergrated in trillian >:E
While I use Trillian for IRC as well (I'm not a very demanding IRC user), compared to programs like mIRC, Trillian's IRC implementation is severely limited and in some aspects even flawed.

Yeah that's sort of true. Best example is BitTorrent. Most people think it's a program like KaZaA while it's only a protocol.
