I think it's pretty ridiculous to write off an entire product line because a few people have had bad experiences. Sure, that new Walkman might be fantastic, but it doesn't mean that all iPods are pieces of shit.
I've heard a lot more people say positive things about iPods than not, and a lot of it just comes down to personal preference.
That said, I do dislike the fact that I have to use iTunes, although I think someone here has posted an alternative program that works. It's not so much that iTunes sucks, I've had no issues with it, I just don't like being forced to use ONLY what Apple says I can.

The only reason why I own a iPod is because you can't help noticing all the advertizing out in the world, I just started to notice all the other MP3 players available out there because of my purchase. er, "portable music players" and DAP's were popular before the iPod came around. Apple had a great design and lots of $ for adverts which pushed the iPod name. it didn't single-handedly make DAP's more popular, because it never WASN'T popular to have one. but, it did conquer the rest with an intuitive design and a simplistic, but elegant demeanor.

i'm not going to argue with you about the advertising aspect, but i don't think you're giving the iPod proper credit in its current form. no, it's not perfect, but it's pretty darn close.

I just opened and closed iTunes and there are no new tasks running in my task manager. And all the other processes are certainly not related to iTunes.

lol.. the ipod battery thing. I believe the cost to replace the battery is now $59.99. I bet a battery doesn't cost much less than that retail. I just bought a battery for my camera the other day at the local mom & pop camera shop and paid $50 for something I could get for 30 on Amazon.

I had my ipod repaired when I dropped my backpack on top of my ipod and damaged the click wheel. I received a new one in mail within 2 days and sent the old one back. I wasn't 'treated like shit,' in fact, I never had to talk to a single Apple rep.

I probably walk by a dozen people sporting ipods every day and I don't notice a single one of them. I notice people are listening to music and don't give a shit what they are using.

itunes is not 'bloated.' you just rehash what every other person who's grown up with winamp or WMP say when faced with another program they don't want to become familiar with. My computer has a gig and a half of ram because I intended to use it, not account for every lost kilobyte.

Yeah it would make news. When some kid got mugged for his shoes a year or two back it hit the papers so muggers targetting people who have an iPod would definitely make it as well. In downtown Van you see at least one pedestrian with an iPod per block while walking around and there is no associated crime wave.

Apple has earned their absolute market dominance by putting out the best looking product with the easiest to use interface.

So does Dell and any other computer company you contact for warranty service. Everytime one of our LCD monitors goes bad, they send us a new monitor, not a new LCD panel to put in the monitor. They don't fix our hard drives, they give us new ones. The ipod is no different. Apple treats it as unit like an LCD instead of parting it out like a hard drive in a computer.

But what dell send you is NEW. Replacement ipods are USED units.

No they don't, they send you REFURBISHED equipment. You try fighting with them on the phone because they refuse to send you a NEW LCD (because the refurbished ones are always have an annoying pinkish hue).

A bit of an update.

The software is really nice to use. I havn't used itunes before so I can't compare them but this thing is great. I can DL a whole album in about 12 minutes on my shitty connection, album ripping is super easy and automated and adding your own album covers is a piece of piss.

Now I jsut need the player to arrive.
