HDR is tricky thing to do. It balances on the 'arty' side of photography and it's a personal taste if you like it or not. I'm not overly fond of it since it looks unnatural to me. Single-shot RAW HDR photos are something I like to do more in the future.
I took this HDR photo last year, composed of 3 or 5 exposures. I like the details in the photo, took me a few tries with Photomatrix to get it like this.

Nice photos Sparkle. Bit heavy on the contrast and blacks, but for artistic purposes it's good.

I hear you about personal taste and HDR. I see a lot of HDR that looks so overprocessed that the image looks more like a cheap oil painting than anything resembling a photograph. I tend to like it more for landscapes more than indoor stuff because of the details you can preserve and show in so many different areas.
The shot you posted here is the type of indoor stuff I like - where you might not be able to tell HDR was done unless you knew something about photography.

These little guys were trying to pick up this feather. Tough to time the shot, and the lighting wasn't great, but I though the reflection/shadow of this one was cool. You had to be really quick to get them going by.

I would comment on the above photos but we have all grown a lot and there's some real nice work going on. But the thing is when you make it a job, it's no fun any more.
Macro..........60mm with a 36 mm Kenko Tube at ground level focus stacked. Really making me want that MPE-65 all over again. (EXIF Data stripped due to stacking)

Jesus that thing is ugly. That's a compliment on the detail of the picture, btw.
Can you tell me what kind of bird it was I photographed in that feather fly by picture Form?
My wife's uncle has had a 100mm macro for his Canon that he has never used. Said he would send it to me to 'figure out' because he only uses the 100-400mm he has. I hope he sends it soon. I really want to try some macro.

I can honestly admit I have never seen that bird or a type of it. Never seen such green colors around here.
Above is a Crab Spider on the hunt.

Violet-green swallow.
The one in the pine tree is a cedar waxwing.
Also, great pics. I share your thoughts on HDR. It's pretty cool, but often overused. My view on good photography is capturing the moment as it looks to you. HDR can help mimic the way we perceive a scene, but only when done right. Those landscape photos do a pretty good job of that.

The longest and most intense lightning storm I've ever seen went overhead tonight, took a bunch of pics before it was close enough to pour on us - but we got caught in it really heavy when I went up onto a prairie to try and get some more pics. Didn't work out, huge hail and lightning hit a tree about 100 yards away at one point, almost causing me to crash the car. But here's one of the shots before all hell broke loose overhead. The lights down to the left are a water treatment plant near the river.
First lightning shots ever for me, I was happy with how they turned out.
