RAGE looks like shit up close. BF3 doesn't. Simple as that really.
So what if you have to install a texture pack to get hi-res textures? At least you get the option. With RAGE, you're stuck with low res textures, whether you have a 360 or a £2000 PC. That's the difference.
I'm just happy a developer is finally putting PC first for a change. The SP campaign in BF3 is actually dull as shit, but it's a pretty beautiful tech demo, if nothing else. Mirrors Edge 2 is going to look amazing.

I was only able to play about 30 minutes of the SP campaign and it's fucking awesome. It runs very fluid on the PC. Enough settings to tweak the graphics. Everything looks great. It plays a lot less arcade [playing on hard] which makes it seem more realistic. If you get hit in the head, it's game over and you can only take 2, 3 shots on the body before you go down.
Subway opening is impressive, I'm now in an Arab country fighting a streetwar with my squad. Besides the graphics and the gameplay, everything else is really polished. It's been a while since a PC game gave me no trouble at all.
On a special note. The sound design is amazing. I have a Logitech Z5500 5.1 speaker set and it's just like your in the middle of it. My wife, who hates these kinda games, came to ask if I could turn the volume down of the war movie I was watching. I said no honey, this is a game I'm playing. Says enough I think.

I suggest starting as Engineer, always helpful to have an RPG till you get use to spotting and avoiding vehicles. Q button is your friend.

Default is Q, it will spot an enemy for your team to see until he goes back into cover. If you press Q while looking at a teammate it will request ammo/health depending on their class...if you press Q on a point it will direct the squad to attack that position...if you hold down Q it brings up the com menu. You can change the bind under "common" in key bindings.
