The mp is way too random. 80% of my deaths feel like there's little I can do to avoid them, from the guy camping on a roof, dudes fucking you up from behind, and helicopters raping your butt. Everything else is good though. Rental.

That's the main problem I find with playing SP on veteran difficulty - there are many situations in the game where there is just so much random gunfire from all angles its a matter of getting lucky and pushing forward to the next checkpoint - enemies seem to spawn forever, so its all about pushing forward and hoping you live long enough to hit a checkpoint. Then repeat.

Actually, this is the first CoD game where enemies don't spawn forever. Every stage has a finite amount of enemies in it.

yeah, i found myself trying to play oldschool cod style and constantly push. there were a few levels where that was a BAD IDEA especially when noticing that the checkpoint system saves enemy states. so i'd be rushing through, hit a checkpoint, and then BAM!dead.1 second later. then whenever i reloaded at the last checkpoint it was pretty much insta-death.
all in all, the single player wasn't bad but it wasn't anywhere near as good as cod4. one of the most enjoyable parts was the throwback to goldeneye for the n64. "defend object for x amount of time," even though a freakin hated that level back in the day. cod4 was awesome in that the story unfolded like an actual movie or book. it had the rise, climax, fall, second climax, fin. this game was like, "OMG CLIMAX FUCK ME MORE HARDER HARDER I CAME NO FUCK ME MORE OK I CAME AGAIN BUT IT WAS DUST BUT KEEP FUCKING ME OOHHHHHHH.GGGGOOOOOOOODDDDDDD.YYYYYYYYEEEEEESSSSSSSS."

oh, and MP is pretty solid. just like cod4 but enhanced so it's still fun. borderlands is a better game though, imo.

Had this problem in the Brazilian level a few times, but fortunately every time I had just enough time to dive into cover or turn around and shoot the enemy before he got me.

THAT is simply horrible design. Any game that has a checkpoint where the player can die within 5 seconds of loading is taking the piss or has a game designer that is so bitter and hates gamers so much he/she should be designing board/card games...not video games.
Sorry...but that's just fucking pathetic and reeks of elitism.

The story and gameplay totally make up for all that. Okay the "storyline" itself is crap that makes no sense at all (if you can infiltrate whoever's ranks, why don't you just kill him to avert a massacre?) As is the justification for the betrayal stuff. But the way it's presented through gameplay is unparalleled and actually, it is the first time I ever gave a fuck when a game character died.

I got my first bit of MW2 multiplayer on yesterday evening and damn, it was pretty much crap all the way to the end of it.
I think that out of the 30 times I died, I actually knew where my killer was probably twice. It's probably all due to me sucking incredibly much at this game, but for some reason it just couldn't grip me.
Encounters with enemies rarely last longer than a quarter of a second, because it takes that long to kill someone. There's no good firefights. That's probably an odd thing to say for someone that enjoyed Quake so thoroughly, but Quake felt a lot more direct. In my mind it feels like it takes longer to kill someone in Quake than it takes in MW2, which means that in Quake, if you get hit, that's a cue there's an enemy and you can fight back. If someone gets a clear shot on you in MW2, you're already dead.
At one point it started pissing me off when unseen enemies were able to pick me off 3 seconds after spawning with just 3 well placed bullets at 200 meters distance. Not to mention all the odd icons and bleeps and messages that mean nothing to me. What is this weird satellite dish icon thing for instance?
Maybe it has to grow on me, but I think I prefer the old health bubble and armor system of Quake and Unreal over this "BLAM! You're Dead!" kind of gameplay.

turn up the brightness a little to help with seeing the bad guys. the camo for the coalition forces in this game is really really good too, so if you're on the rebel style team, be ready to be easily spotted. some games i can whoop ass, others it's the other way around. for example last night i did a ffa match with the ACR silenced/fmj/stopping power pro and went 30-5 ftw. found a nice multi angle campspot and just rained hell. other times on the same map i'll get destroyed, shot in the back on every death. after getting shot in the back 5 times in a row i just leave the game since at that point i know im not in the rythm of the win.

it's almost, like, more realistic or something.

Yes and realistic always, without exception, means better gameplay

Started playing the SP campaign.
Pretty sweet...nothing new thusfar really, but classic cod goodness.
Played through the favela level just now, and it was tough goin' (playing on 'hardened'). Two, three hits and you're down.
I *did* get the impression there was infinite enemy respawn, until you progressed through the map, plus there *were* dawgz
Think I'm gonna do the special ops missions after finishing, play through SP again on 'veteran', but will leave the MP for what it is, right now.
yes I know, MP is where it's at with cod etc. But I'm just disheartened by the lack of dedicated servers, resulting in crappy ping.
Plus I suck at twitch shooters (he says on a board dedicated to the twitchiest shooter there is

), and prefer more teamwork focussed stuff online.

Yeah but while Quake 3 is really fast, it's a completely different kind of fast from MW2. The simple fact that it takes longer to die in Q3 (if you're stocked up well with health/armor) means that there's actual duelling to be done rather than see who can hit the fire button the quickest.

Exactly. There's strategy in Q3A, where you know where items respawn, and try to get there when they do.
This whole simplistic run and gun gameplay that is cod mp just puts me off.
Then again, this is solely based on my brief cod4 experience, quickly losing interest...

Err, so yeah i watched some gameplay vids and i gotta ask: is there any teamplay involved in winning a match or is it pretty much spawn run shoot die? I see no method.

Depends on how many friends you have to party up with.
I normally play with 5-6 friends so we have a good team match. If you play on your own it always turns out to be a run/shoot/die game unless you bump into a like minded sole.

what he said... play with friends who can use the communicator with and you'll see a difference.

I must say it's not really a fair question. How much team play is there actually going on in Quake3 CTF games or Battlefield games on public servers?
