Because if that's the case then I can't help but think that either your game configuration or system settings are fucked (or there's a chance that it's due to a bug in the game).
While I haven't seen the game run in real-time with my own eyes, I just cannot imagine id Software showcasing a game at gaming expo showfloors that look like something they won't deliver to the consumers. That just makes no sense.
I'm not saying that the game was released in an acceptable state, obviously there are problems, but if the game looks as crap as many people want us to believe then I'm more inclined to think that it's a configuration problem or possibly a bug in the game than to think that the game (engine) is inherently flawed or that the assets are of such poor quality.
The screenshot you posted after this shows the extremes. Firstly, the bottom shot is obviously a lod-related issue, where the person playing probably moved around fast and the full texture hadn't loaded in yet. I don't get this problem, since i'm on an nvidia card and have properly set up my cache/vt settings. I've also got 1.5gb of VRAM and 12gb of main RAM, so it's just not an issue for me. The shot above it is probably from that id uncompressed 1tb build and is nowhere near the quality you get in game. So both are wrong.
There's nothing wrong with mine or any other machine. Just browse
this thread on the steam forums and you'll see how bad it is. Note that these kind of textures are EVERYWHERE in the world and not something you have to struggle to look for. The Mayors office for example is surrounded by paintings and other models that are literally smeared in shit textures. There is either something dramatically wrong with the way RAGE is loading textures, or the textures themselves are low res. Hopefully it's the former and it will be fixed, but if it's the latter, then megatextures (lol) was the worst idea ever and id's reputation for making next-level engines was just shot to shreds.

Here are some screenshots I've just taken, mainly from Wellsprings, which shows the extent of the texture inconsistancy issues. These are with a GTX 580 (overclocked), i7 920@3.8ghz, 12gb DDR3 Corsair Vengence RAM @ 1920x1200 with 8x AA and GPU transcoding.

Character models and textures look great. Unfortunately, everything else is a mess.

I'm getting 60FPS locked, 1280x1050, 4xAF, no AA, and I never see ANY streaming issues. But thats only because I used the following on the command line and created the cache dir:
+set com_allowConsole 1 +set com_skipIntroVideo 1 +set vt_pageimagesizeuniquediffuseonly2 8192 +set vt_pageimagesizeuniquediffuseonly 8192 +set vt_pageimagesizeunique 8192 +set vt_pageimagesizevmtr 8192 +set fc_maxcachememoryMB 1024
Before I did that, I had random FPS and a lot of streaming issues.
EDIT: Negative on the poor FPS... I was using the console at the time, and I had FRAPS enabled... So it was recording movies by mistake, lol. But the above fixed the streaming issues big time. I wish I could use 16k texture pools but sadly this happens when I do:

But with 8k, its perfect:

well, that could be because the shot is very carefully set to not have anything too close to view...you can already tell that there are iffy textures on those barriers in front of the player. As for the view farther away... well, that's self explanatory.

The same could be said for all the other shots. They're carefully set up to show low res textures in full view.
Oh and it's a whole gallery full of slick looking screenshots. So I'm not too worried about this game.

The biggest issue I'm seeing isn't the resolution as such. When you play, you look at the image as a whole, and its surprising how little you notice. Of course you'll notice on a static screenshot... But the biggest issue I see, is that the compression gets fucked up the arse the darker the area. So, if you go into a black shadow room, forget seeing anything other than jpeg compression style blocks and muddy textures.
Plus, for some reason, their dust/smoke particle effects have no actual texture, its just soft. And this doesn't help make the world look any less blurred, because they blend in too much.

why on earth would you overclock on a beast with that many teeth? you're risking errors in games tenfold needlessly

looks like the alpha male is insecure

It's factory overclocked with a custom heatsink.

Actually, RAGE is the only game i've played where textures look shit whether you're an inch away from an object or 10 ft.

I suspect the problems are hardware/driver specific. o'dium and Eraser's shots look amazing, brisk not so much. You guys may want to post driver versions.

That shot I just posted is what odium thinks looks good, obsidian. It's one of his screenshots.
I'm using 285.38 btw. And yeah, framerate never drops below 60, ever. Performance wise, it's perfect and my system is well above the recommended xbox360 spec.

				Intel i7 CPU 950 @3.07ghz
BFG GTX 295 SLI (One GPU disabled for Rage) running driver version 285.38
4gig Corsair Ram (Can't recall name, but its the fast expensive shit)
Windows 7 64bit
Fatality x-Fi Pro Sound Card
Shitty bog standard WD or something HDD.
Now, as I said before, my game runs flawless. Not a single frame rate drop, it sticks to 60 at all times no matter what, and I've only once or twice even noticed texture streaming but that was when pelting it into a new large area at fast speed, and even then once it loads... Its loaded. The cache file edit by making the folder by hand, plus the settings I posted above, those were my only changes.

I'm going to try starting over. I saved and quit inside a room and now whenever I try to load that save all the texture loading freezes my computer for up to a minute at a time. So I'm trapped there basically.

These seem to have helped a little, if only to give it a kind of "unsharp mask" style look. Put them in Rageconfig.cfg in your base folder.
