Quake 4 is a franchise, becuase Raven are working on it although it's an id software title.

Epic create their Unreal line of games in-house and as such it isn't a franchise.
Unreal 2 was developed by Legend, so Unreal does qualify as a franchise, just like Quake.

They are franchises. There's more on the market than just games. There's clothing, action figurines, tournaments (QuakeCon), etc

edit:
maybe quakecon doesn't count because it's organised by id Software (or isn't it?)

Foo I was at the 4chan panel this weekend at otakon. It was legendary. 600 people showed up in line for the panel in total, but only 200 could be let in.

Actually it was 66 usd. It was amazing. Right when people started leaving I saw ALTERNATIVE rush to the front row with a shirt and then 20 dollar bills went flying in the air.

The name of a business that is operated by a franchisee and to whom a franchiser grants the right to market a good or service. It provides another option to starting a business and buying a business. The franchisee usually pays a fee and/or a percentage of sales to the franchiser for receiving financial help, training, supplies, a protected market and technical assistance from the franchiser.

(1) A statutory right which could not be exercised in the absence of the statute, such as the statutes enabling persons to form a corporation. Since a corporation is created by the statute, it could not be formed except by the grant of the legislature. (2) A combination of individual ownership and central control. One may own a fast food restaurant, hotel, hardware store, etc., yet use the name of a national company. Each individual owner pays for the name use, advertising, and may be required to make certain purchases (napkins, buns, etc.) from the national company. The real estate

For example - (for the retarded)

I opened Pyro's Burgers Ltd an independant trading company speciliasing in Food. I then BUY McDonalds Franchise. I KEEP trading as Pyro's Burgers Ltd However I have USE of McDonalds Logo's Training Facilities and products.

Pyro's Burger Ltd ------>operating under McDonalds-------->Serving products created by and purchased from McDonalds

Volkswagen (Owner of a Company Called Europcar)--------->Europcar-------->Northern Vehicles Ltd (Using Europcar Trading name and Symbology)

Quake and Unreal are not franchise's in a traditional sense since they are NOT a business model/s.

ID - > Granting Raven (franchise as defined by the following 3 factors... 1. the grant of trademark or rights, 2. a prescribed marketing plan and 3. payment of a franchise fee for the rights.) Use of the Quake Symobology and Trademark for production of quake 4. = Just BECAME a franchise

EA - Use FIFA engine to develope FIFA (*please insert appropriate designation number ie '05 '06/whatever) (FIFA - Governing Body for international football/soccer) = IS A FRANCHISE of the traditional sense

I cant think of that many games that are franchise's (Not counting the obligatory Madden, Resident Evil, Tiger, FIFA, World Rally Championship and anything else that was formed primarily on an external company/product or business model) because USUALLY the developer of the original title is looking to make money from any angle possible since the developer doesnt tend to make its own engine (when using middleware) therefore the ability to sell aforementioned engine is negated, hence the product becomes solely the game. If the game becomes popular, they tend to hold onto the original capital (the game) till fade. We also have to consider that games are still a niche market as popularity tends to be with established franchises (Ie madden et'la) so we dont regularily see a whole lot of new franchises coming to fruition as gambling on new titles is often frowned upon due to high development costs.

Once however the original enthusiasm is gone, marketing criteria generally indicates that in order to generate more revenue a company must licence the original product or business model to avoid saturation, IE, the company exploding in on itself. This allows for a continuation of the the original product into further different areas such as TV, movies, toy's and other areas that are not of the licensors speciality. At this point the original product becomes a franchise as the rights for its image and use has been licenced to an authorised trader.

However a couple of sequels a franchise does not make.

Working udner the assumption that the Unreal Universe is made by Epic or the originators/subsidiary (of the parent company) then Quake (now a franchise) Unreal (not a franchise) = you right, he wrong

however if there are toys (and I cant be bothered looking it up to find out) and the licence to make those toys was given to the trading company then to be honest I am not sure. If the toy is manufactured by a third party under licence then the product has become franchised.

Owner------>Product-------->profit
/ /
/ /
Contract.......Licensee-------->Gross Profit - Licence agreement------>profit

Epic- > Granting (*some third party)Company (franchise as defined by the following 3 factors... 1. the grant of trademark or rights, 2. a prescribed marketing plan and 3. payment of a franchise fee for the rights.) Use of the Unreal Symobology and Trademark for production of Toys. = Just BECAME a franchise

phew, I'm glad we finally sorted that out

now, if they could just hire a decent art director and do something about the floaty movement and handling and the spammy, skilless weapons perhaps we'll get a good game out of this franchise
