As I see it, no democrat has a chance to win an election on reputation alone, but Hilary has managed to position herself closer to the center where the majority of voters lie. The last election was close and unless Bush pulls off a miracle in the next couple of years, those votes in the middle are up for grabs.
The Democrats have to ball up and redefine the 'center'...right now, it is defined by the republicans, and Hillary is not capable of out republicaning the republicans...she'll look like a complete tool if she fully goes this route. It will appear as a purely political move and she'll get eaten alive.

The entire conception of the 'center' and of 'values' and responsibility needs to be given a different interpretation by the democrats. The democrats have been stumbling around like drunken hobos for the last few years because they have no actual ideology to call their own....or I should say, they have no actual ideology that is both attractive and cogent to the huddled masses. But it has to be pitched in a way so it doesn't just look like Republican Lite.

John Edwards, whatever other faults he may have, could do this...with conviction...and they'd be farkin' aceholes to not give him another serious look in 2008.
