You generally don't...the statistics show that on average a location won't be hit by two category 4's for something like 23 years or something, and the smaller ones don't usually require a rebuiling of the house.
However, I'd rather not deal with the risk or hassle period...call me a weather wuss or whatever, but I'd have no patience for evacuations, flooding, etc. I wouldn't live in California near the faultlines either. I figure that we all know the big one is coming...why risk being there when it does? hehe.

Why might we be seeing a change in hurricane conditions?

I'm just wondering if this keeps up for 3 or 4 more years, if FL will turn into a ghost town, with nobody but idiots and survivalist nuts wanting to live there.

And I'm going to be in the Virgin Islands next week - I hope the weather's calmed down around there by then.

It didnt hit here in tampa too hard at all....it was just like a heavy storm. nothing too serious.
