watched it in the cinema with just me and my 6 other mates there, smoking and drinking beer... was awesome
[spoiler - probaly]
as for the film (aint watched the original or listened to the musical) i thought it was good, very good
i was expecting more though, like battlescenes of tanks charging in and shit with a little bit more at the end instead of a bunch of birds munching on the giant thing
wouldnt mind a bit more added to the storyline either
and if those were my kids, i would beat them senseless, especially the lil brat who wouldnt stop screaming
but nah, i thought it was very very good

The movie was absolutelly excellent. They didn't regurgitate the book on screen, they purposedly made it different than the book. Hence why it takes place in the U.S.
What Spielberg did, was show the audience the sense of confusion and histeria that the people went through in the story. Half the time, the audience and cast don't know what the fuck. Essentially, if War of the Worlds really happenned, what would happen to a single father in brooklyn.
I really liked it, and recommend it.

saw it last night. loved it. the cinematography was amazing. while the storyline was rather weak at its core, i still think the movie is well worth it just to simply entertain the idea of a "what if" for a few hours.
there was a plot hole though. at the beginning it said the aliens planned this attack out of spite towards humans or something, right? but then later it's concluded that they had planned the attack millions of years before humans existed. so uh, what gives? did i not understand something at the beginning and it was actually earth as a whole they didn't like?

A lot of people are saying things like "The ending really sucked, it was over too quick"reefsurfer wrote:Fucking awsome... but did Spielberg loose the budget the last 40 mins?
This worked for me. It was much better than the aliens being taken out by the army or some shit. It was good because through all their technology (and ours) it was germs that killed them. Simple as that.
Also the whole movie was through Ray's eyes. There was no shots of locations around the world or anything like that, it was all purely focused on Ray and his daughter. So when he gets to Boston he notices, like everyone else, that the aliens are dieing. No big explanation, nothing. They.. well.. just died.
There were flaws though. I think some of the pacing was a little off in the middle. The story with his son sucked balls and he should have died.
Overall though, I thought it was excellent.

Not millions of years before we existed. A million years before there were people there. Don't think it was at all before we existed. But maybe it was. Maybe they needed to see what the difference was since we can live here and they couldn't and they failed do figure it out in time. Not sure.
Anyways. I belive Wells intention with the book was to show how it is to be the weaker part in a war to the English empire since they had lots of colonies and were pretty brutal etc.. And I think Spielberg did that well in the movie also. Not towards the English empire, but in general.

Sly Stallone is teaming up with Auhnold in the remade remake of the remake of the radio show. It'll be out next year and Uwe Boll is directing.Pauly wrote:This worked for me. It was much better than the aliens being taken out by the army or some shit.
BTW...I talked to a co-worker today about the movie and he loved it. I've seen the original movie and I know the story but my only comment was thus: "An intelligent, advanced society fails in its attempt to invade Earth because they forgot to bring a fucking respirator?"
I never liked the ending....in any of the versions. I wanted more explosions and Randy Quaid flying an F-18 into the gaping vagina of a mothership.
I saw it at the theatre...I thought the whole thing was great. Everything about it. I liked how it was just about this one guy and his family trying to get to safety, there was no huge storyline.
The reactions seemed realistic...like when the lightning storm came he was laughing at first like it was nothing...then it started going all out and he ran to get inside. The acting of the little girl seemed pretty real as well. She was just like a real 10 year old brat.
It focused on the things most movies like this wouldn't. for example when they stole the van...it was made a big point to let us know he didn't want that van stolen by anyone. I thought it was an important part of the story.

Good effects, generally decent storyline. The ending threw me at first (and I feel it could still have been developed a little more), but it still worked.
There were some powerful scenes in the film. The bodies floating down the river was particularly harrowing, and the basement scene was well shot.
The minor plotholes were kinda annoying (namely the EMP/camcorder incident, plus the fact a fucking 747 lands in the back garden, destroys the shit out of the house, but the car in the driveway remains intact), and yes, the son should have died. It was a typical Spielberg cop-out ending in that respect, though it was salvaged somewhat by the fact that Cruise stood alone away from the rest of his family at the end... so despite the obvious bonding that occured during the whole survival trial, it was still quite bitter-sweet.
Not perfect, but I liked it.
