Fact: I've deployed SP2 to over 1000 machines with no issues client side.. the only thing that went wrong was the SMS server couldn't handle all those machines clobbering it at once for a massive update download.

Unless he was trying some buffer overload combined with malicious JPEG, his posts did nothing more than bring your machines to a crawl trying to load a 800*600 image resized to something like 9 million * 9 million with height and width tags.

I'm currently in a battle with the IT guy at work because I refuse to install SP2 on my work laptop until after the year is over because I don't want to take a chance on my work laptop getting hosed and having to go through the hassle of restoring all my grades, etc.

Why, because he can't physically take my laptop from me and make me let him install it?

I've got no real problem with SP2, but I've known 3 people personally (and heard stories here) who have had the installation completely bone their system. I've got shit backed up, but at this point (close to the end of the schoolyear), I'd just stick with what I've got and now have to worry about any potential issues - no matter how small the risk.

He doesn't need balls, btw, for the most part, becuase the building is full of people who rely on him to connect their computers to a TV for s-video output...that keeps him busy enough.

Same here. Updates are automatically pushed out and they get a five minute notice if a reboot is needed.

I've heard of it and its usually due to a driver issue when that happens. Its not too common either.

If you are that scared make a backup of your system, there is a few ways you can do that. SP2 is not only faster with modern software it's also much more secure and stable, at least from my experience.

Couple things:
A) I'm aware that I would pose a security risk, but I don't access the schools network with my laptop because I don't use any of the shared resources. I do my email through their web access, and use a desktop in my room for everything else. The laptop is simply my personal work machine that I do all my grading and lesson planning on. I've got too much shit on it right now to want to risk the miniscule chance that SP1 will bone it.

B) No, we don't have much of an IT department. We have people that didn't use a computer until their 40's, and then dropped the lline of work they had done for most of their lives and got their MCSE at an extended learning place. Most don't know what UNIX iis. In fact, one of them actually asked me what Linux was when I told him I was going to set up a dual boot on my tablet and asked him if he knew if Linux even had support for tablets yet.

C) They didn't roll SP2 out. They actually had every user download it from the share drive and install it.

D) Don't ask me why in regards to C.

E) Probably the same reason they won't use a ghosting program to rebuild machines.

F) I'll install SP2 when I'm damn good and ready, and I am more conscious about network security at work than anyone else in the building. (I'm constantly giving people shit for leaving themselves logged into common computers...their email, etc., all wide open...passwords on sticky notes stuck to monitors). Not to mention the asshats who do shit like use network printers as their personal copy machines, firing off 150 copies of a worksheet instead of 1 and having it copied.
