The statistics don't favor surgery of the spine. 40% of the people keep having pain or even worsening of the symptoms.
Actually, there have been many studies that show no difference in pain of function between people with surgery of the lower back or with conservative treatment (rest, physiotherapy), after one year follow-up.

It's a big business in the States. Spine fusion costs around 120.000$, multiply that with 400.000 patients. Every year.
The spinal cord stimulation for lower back pain costs around 15.000-25.000 depending on the system.
