Re: Who wants to see Scottish independence :D
Well further powers would need to be devolved to Wales and NI 1st but if that's the case then our constituencies have no right voting on English policies. With this being the case then the UK elections will essentially be for England only, if England can squeeze a parliament in before the devolution of powers then old tory and new labour will be as powerful as the Queen.
If voting was serperated under UK politics then Scotland, NI and Wales would be under Labour, which provides a good case for independance, why be run by someone 'we' never voted for ?

Re: Who wants to see Scottish independence :D
Well we voted to stay part of the uk, but it certainly wasn't a vote for the status quo... where to from here i wonder. Would love to see proper actual devolved powers going out to al UK nation states but who knows what Westminster will 'allow'.
Re: Who wants to see Scottish independence :D
eh? i seem to remember it was Westminster who 'allowed' all the current devolution, and found that - outside of Scotland at least - there was little enthusiasm for it. the Welsh assembly barely squeaked into existence, and there was never any great interest in regional English parliaments

i thought you were just guessing, but you appear to be correct: http://cir.ca/news/scottish-independence-referendumvesp wrote:Well we voted to stay part of the uk
Re: Who wants to see Scottish independence :D
The devolution vote had a much higher win percentage though and at the moment you got 'foreign' ministers voting for matters that has no concern for them. I'm not saying it should happen but just as a 'what if' scenario and Cameroon could be rendered useless. In the future you will probaly find that Welsh MPs will be restricted from voting on certain policies that are administered by the Welsh assembly.seremtan wrote:eh? i seem to remember it was Westminster who 'allowed' all the current devolution, and found that - outside of Scotland at least - there was little enthusiasm for it. the Welsh assembly barely squeaked into existence, and there was never any great interest in regional English parliaments
Also, well done Scotland

Re: Who wants to see Scottish independence :D
all this talk of Scottish MPs voting on English matters and English MPs voting on Welsh matters etc ignores the fact that we're in the EU, so there's loads of decision-making that's been outsourced to the EU, and also that Alex Salmond wanted to join that same EU ASAP. so much for 'Scottish sovereignty'
and let's not even get started about the influence of 'the market'

Re: Who wants to see Scottish independence :D
I'm not unhappy with the result, as it will hopefully shake up UK politics.
I wasn't clear with my earlier statement (sorry seremtan), I meant that UK politics are a bit muddy overall, with some devolved powers here and there etc - and discussion over things like the West Lothian Question (as chunk pointed out - ministers voting for matters that don't directly affect their individual countries).
Should England have more say on English matters, Wales on Welsh matters etc, essentially become a federated UK?
The status quo can be fine, but it seems (from an admittedly crappy personal view of social media etc) that this sort of feeling is beginning to grow throughout the UK and not just in Scotland?
But any major changes in politics would have to get past the incumbent political bodies... and obviously a lot of them will be quite happy with the way things are (they are in power, so the system suits them)
That's more what I meant, but couldn't be arse typing it out on my phone
I am however, pretty hopeless at political discourse as I'm not hardline one way or the other. It's hard to hold up reasonable discussions against heavy handed arguments, as my facebook feed continually shows!

Re: Who wants to see Scottish independence :D
exactly... i'm fed up with the social media opinion that we have chosen to continue being "dominated by England" (a flawed point of view), but as you point out the alternative would be dominated by the EU... so meh :Pseremtan wrote:all this talk of Scottish MPs voting on English matters and English MPs voting on Welsh matters etc ignores the fact that we're in the EU, so there's loads of decision-making that's been outsourced to the EU, and also that Alex Salmond wanted to join that same EU ASAP. so much for 'Scottish sovereignty'

Too many of the "och muuh freedumz" crowd don't seem to realise that we wouldn't have just been able to do whatever the fuck we wanted.
Thankfully most of them are ignorable bawbags anyway, so that's a help.
Most of us Scots are very reasonable folk... don't be too swayed by media representation of us as the freedom brigade
Re: Who wants to see Scottish independence :D
The EU doesn;t have overall power over local decisions though, for example education, healthcare, taxes, spending, law etc. At the moment you got things like the Welsh assembly subsidising higher tuition fees that Westminster granted, subsidising free prescriptions and propping in the NHS through Westminster trying to privatise the whole service which results in struggle against policies enforced by the English parliament and wasted money. At the moment Welsh interests doesn't align with those of the English and already has a huge divergence in those 20 powers that were granted to Wales and it's resulting in our assembly trying to use what little influence it has to put a plaster on what Westminster has enforced. By giving Wales power over spending and its own laws this can be avoided and Wales can set the agenda based on its needs rather than those of England. This isn't nationalistic pride, I like being a Brit and rivalry aside the English are cool, but at the moment Westminster is promising more austerity which are policies very few of the Welsh had voted for, in the last general election it was 26 seats to labour VS 8 for Tory. In the current environment Wales will always be at a loss, if Scotland had taken its seats with them then it would be our 40 ? seats VS the English 300+, even though Scotland has stayed within the union 'we' still have little to no power over who runs our country.seremtan wrote:all this talk of Scottish MPs voting on English matters and English MPs voting on Welsh matters etc ignores the fact that we're in the EU, so there's loads of decision-making that's been outsourced to the EU, and also that Alex Salmond wanted to join that same EU ASAP. so much for 'Scottish sovereignty'

Edit: when I was talking about Scotland leaving the union and leaving our 40 vs 300+ I was refering to the Tories, which usually find safe haven in English constituencies.

Re: Who wants to see Scottish independence :D
TBH pretty much everything I had seen and heard about was to do with politics rather than Braveheart pride. Even the SNP and those who opposed it were approaching things from a (childish - mudslinging) political standpoint.vesp wrote:exactly... i'm fed up with the social media opinion that we have chosen to continue being "dominated by England" (a flawed point of view), but as you point out the alternative would be dominated by the EU... so meh :Pseremtan wrote:all this talk of Scottish MPs voting on English matters and English MPs voting on Welsh matters etc ignores the fact that we're in the EU, so there's loads of decision-making that's been outsourced to the EU, and also that Alex Salmond wanted to join that same EU ASAP. so much for 'Scottish sovereignty'

well, that's good
Re: Who wants to see Scottish independence :D
It is
, your country paved the way for some pretty constructive debates over the way the UK is run
I didn't want to see Scotland leave nor do I want an Independant Wales but the powers in the seats nearly lost the union due to some pretty decent concerns.
Also, I won 80 quid for an 80%+ turnout... DING DING

Re: Who wants to see Scottish independence :D
how about abolishing the House of Lords and replacing it with a Senate in which each of the four nations are represented by an equal number of (elected) senators? two problems solved for the price of one
Re: Who wants to see Scottish independence :D
But then you'll have a minority public with equal representation =/, that can't be good news for the English ?.
