I'm guessing that Cohle is deep undercover (in the present), vigilante or not, and looking for something from Marty since he most likely discovers Marty's, daughter's involvement. Redemption? Maybe, but most likely with a price.
The biggest question is, how has Marty's daughter been involved in this rogue organization since childhood, without anyone catching on?

Good show, watched the first 4 episodes this weekend. Thought it was a little slow at first but things seem to pick up in ep 4 
I especially like the way it's filmed and the sound - they quite nail that feeling of desolate horribleness
