Keep looking, expand on your options and if you find a bike you like be prepared to travel.

Then don't. 250's are for faggots. If you have a small amount of experience and don't ride like a fuckwit you'll be fine on a mid-range powered bike. Get a 250 and you'll seriously regret it after about 3 months of riding.
Alternatives to SV650 in your price range:
Suzuki GSF600 Bandit (this would be my choice)
Honda CB600F Hornet
Honda NTV 600/650
Yamaha Fazer 600
And plenty more.
I4 for a first bike isn't ideal but I agree that a midsized bike would be fine. Thing is that there weren't any on craigslist, those two 250s were the only standards I saw besides a fucked up ninja 500 and a buell blast. I'd still say stick to twins like the sv over a bandit but it's not a death sentence. I say this having learned on a fz6 and later got a 250 as well.
You don't gotta keep a 250 forever....ride it for a year then move up. Especially with one like that 2008 listed at 1700, you could turn around and sell it for 2500 mid summer. They're seriously the best for learning throttle control and anything slow speed. So light and easy to throw around.

thx for the info, I'll keep it in mind.
I do want to play it safe, but I'm planning to eventually commute to work every day. and it will be on roads where ~35 mph will be the max of what I'll be doing. If I plan on going for an actual ride, I'll gear up more...that's the plan anyway.

Another potential SV in baton rouge
http://batonrouge.craigslist.org/mcy/4173969098.html
I'd seriously consider that new gen ninja tho. 250s are low power, sure, but it makes it easier to learn on them, and they still do a mid-high 14 second 1/4 mile. Not fast by bike standards, but quicker than a lot of cars on the road. Provided there isn't anything major the owner is hiding you can sell that bike for 2500 easy mid summer and buy something bigger.
Also this is a popular opinion

but notice the words he used, "You'll be fine". It's true, I started on an i4 600 and I was 'fine'. Then I spent time on a 250 and I learned how to ride well. I don't often see people saying 'start on a 600, you'll be a great rider'. Always 'fine'. On a 600 you can ride and commute and never open the throttle more than 10%. You'll get around 'fine' but that makes it tough to learn throttle control.

Lol SV. Like lawl says, if you're looking for a bike to make you're mind up about owning a bike look for a bandit.

lol are you serious? No more than 10%? Only if you're a complete fucking faggot. One can open it way more than that on a commute and do so while not being an idiot about it. If you don't ride like a retard a 600 is perfectly fine. And you'll get just as much use out of the throttle as a 250 if not more, considering you've always got to ring the cunt out of every gear in a 250 to get anything that comes close to being considered as power, with the top end of every gear being next to useless.

eventually I will get some cleaner looking signal lights and mirrors, but this will do for now
it also came with a 2nd seat (has the plastic cover on it now) and an extra muffler and other crap.
btw etul, that canister was indeed a ride adjuster...had nothing to do with the fuel. I think his hick accent might have thrown me off at first.

So this post tells me you've never ridden a Ninja 250. Congrats on having an opinion on something you know nothing about.

Wrong. Plus I've forgotten more about riding in the last 30 seconds than you'll ever know faggot.
