Basically he's comparing it to data mining, stressing the point that no ones listening to your calls and to do this they would still require probable cause, stressing the point that nothing illegal has happened. It's just that they are collecting records from a variety of sources that the public would'nt normally have access to that's causing a stir, but then raising the point that this has always happened anyway, that there's always been a process before wire trapping and that this is no different. The difference is the lengths that the FBI are willing to stretch in order to thwart terrorists.

I agree with it, but retaining information about these people I find dubious for the same reasons that I hate our police force retaining records of innocent people.

Same goes if they're incorporating a network in order to dupe our phones into releasing information, anyone else would be locked up for l33t h4x.

i don't think his law enforcement analogy really works though. the WoT is conceived of by the people in charge as a war ("the world is a battlefield") not as law enforcement. different rules

Are you new here? You know how it works.
Break it down into refutable sound bytes, yo. Summarize that shit.

NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden identifies himself.

He's either very brave, or very stupid. Or possibly both.

Might be the smart thing to do actually, now that the world knows who he is he'll be harder to do nasty things to.

Still, massive balls... wow.

Manning didn't exactly choose to be outed, did he. Nor did he cleverly leave the country before it happened.

Yeah, and add my name to a list of 42,484 other Yanks who are now being even more closely watched by the government? No thanks.

I emailed my representative and state senators instead. Although according to the EFF, a written letter is 10x more effective than an email, and a phone call is 100x more effective, so I may get on the horn later.

Who cares? If you have nothing to hide what's the problem, right?
All communication is monitored. That's not some Geoff tinfoil hat bullshit, just fact.
And this is not going to go away. Because intelligence gathering agencies are exempt from any control. They operate entirely autonomously, "for our safety".

Even George Orwell underestimated how easily and sheepishly people are manipulated into a false sense of security, willing to give up their privacy, because some vague imminent terrorist threat is thwarted in the process.
Aldous Huxley put the icing in the cake; People are lulled into a state of apathy by all these luxuries they're presented with.

I'm not a revolutionary, I'm just as much a consumer whore as the next guy.
But I do realise some things about our governments are very amiss.
