They're not allowed to call it Metro due to trademark reasons. It's now called the "Windows 8 style UI". Srsly, no joke.

Microsoft always hits the nail when building the desktop of their new installment, into something more hideous than their previous OS.
Originallity is also not their thing, for decades.

Actually, IMO it's one of the few good reasons to d/l software. The Win8 lock in is mandatory, cannot say no to it so you're paying for it nonetheless.

Stardock, isn't that the company behind those nasty DRM rootkits from some years ago?

if
this is anything to go by, win8 might just suck walrus balls
I don’t think it’s an exaggeration to say that Windows 8 is the worst computing experience I’ve ever had. As a desktop operating system, it’s annoying, frustrating, irritating, and baffling to use. I’ve tried on many occasions to explain exactly why it’s so awful to use day-to-day, and most of the time, smoke starts pouring out of my ears. I thought it would be better to get down exactly what the issues are and why you should avoid it.
from the rest of the article, it sounds a bit like 'android/iOS for desktops' i.e. shittingly shit

all those things plus microsoft's move towards a closed platform with an app store (which they control and from whose app sales they take a cut) puts gabe newell's comments about win8 into context. does all that apply to business machines though? win8 sounds like a nightmare for productivity purposes. it's tragic that MS clearly seem to think the future is in tablet-style computing. tablets are ok up to a point, but an alternative to a desktop they ain't
maybe this is the kind of thing that will finally convince ubuntu developers to make an OS that non-geeks can use easily?

I have no proof, but my theory is that Windows 8 is a tablet-focused mess because Microsoft are simply cheap bastards and think they can kill two birds (tablet and desktop OS) with one stone.

You're probably right but they're also probably thinking they can dump dev costs on a second OS.
