the more I look around the more cool stuff I see.
oh btw the rover now seems to be speeding up as mars' gravity is starting to get more of a grip on it. Last night it was just under 8,000 mph, and now it's at 8,000 flat. I'm guessing it's the gravity anyway. And mars seems ever so slightly bigger in view...I'm totally nerding out over this simulator

This is the kind of shit that can grab public attention.

It's kinda funny how they are totally ignoring pluto in this simulator. I mean ok we get it, it's not a planet, but it has historic significance in space exploration and discovery, they should at least include it in there but categorize it for what it is.

Maybe it's too far off view? LOL haters gonna hate etc.

Also, make sure you click on the "Close MSL EDL" button that will add trajectories to everything and makes it easier to grasp wtf is going on.

On the XBox 360 they've got an app up that allows you to watch the landing live as it happends. There's also some informative videos and some free Kinect game.

That was marvelous.

Went looking for the topic as the landing now is so close.
Cross your fingers

Remember hearing about this a while back, sounds ballsy !, landing a a car sized nuclear powered rover on mars using rockets, Hendrix couldnt come up with that shit !. Never thought id see it take off as it seemed a bit wild but fantastic to see it so close !, just hope it works :D

It's landing using rockets AND a skycrane device. Not sure why everyone keeps forgetting that last bit because, to me, that is the most spectacular part of the entire thing.

Yes that's the mind boggling bit for me.

Thanks for the picture showing the comparative size differences in vehicles there obsidian

64,000 miles to go and still traveling at 8,200 mph - time to land 7h 41m

Fingers crossed & good luck.

indeed, it just gets more mental :)... the entire thing is also running on 110 watts, a single light bulb ;o, apparently they only have enough materials for another 1 of these generators that theyre saving for a seperate mission n all

what's running on 110 watts? it has rocket fuel for the landing, and a fucking nuclear reactrolol.

its actually powered by heat and its been done before :p, after 14 years they reckon power output will be down to 100 watts but the rover itself is only designed to run on 110 :)
