which I'm guessing will be the price of the next xbox. hopefully, wii U comes out early enough to enjoy some monopoly on the market before the big boys come out to play.

Competing at the same price range isn't going to work out.

Next XBox will be $399 at least I think. Was the same with last generation. Wasn't the PS3 $499 at launch? Or even $599? Can't remember.

lol PS3, right I forgot, and how did that go?

It's pretty obvious to me that Microsoft won that war.

Launch line-up doesn't seem terribly exciting:

Mostly popular games from the last 6 months everyone has had their fill of.

Yeah MS did, but despite the slow start for Sony, the PS3 has sold reasonably well.

I honestly just don't get what the Wii U is supposed to be. A console? A portable? Why the fuck would you design a controller that can still be used if the television is turned off? Why would you buy a home console machine if you have no intention of using it on your tv? Why is the "Gamepad" designed to look, feel and operate exactly like a tablet/PSP? A gamepad? A gamepad for a home console system? Portable gaming is not living room gaming.

I see no specific SKU they're going for and instead they're trying to cater to every single gaming idea possible...including using the controller to act as a pseudo credit card reader...all to focus on the "casual gamer"? What?

The fact that it was cancelled and restarted several times indicates to me that Nintendo never had a clue what they wanted to do with it and, for the most part, neither do developers.

Nintendo relies so heavily on the Japanese market for its success and I honestly don't see the Wii U changing that anytime soon.

for individual player data during multiplayer games?

maybe during two player simu play when one guy dies the dead guy player "configures" "stuff" whilst dead?

or during turn taking multiplayer games?

This moron makes a list of potential ideas for the Wii U's Gamepad and how it can help RPGs.

All of his ideas are bad.

The idea is that it acts as second screen. This can give a new way to deliver information to the player and a new way for the player to interact with the game (it's a touchscreen). I also believe you can hold up up and have the screen act as a sort of window "through" which you can look, and all sorts of AR things can be done with it (at least, that'd what I understood). And of course there's the way to have different experiences for local multiplayer games.

As a game designer I can tell you right now that any eye movement that takes focus off of the screen is detrimental to gameplay flow. This has been proven time and again. The DS works because both screens are so close they're essentially one screen.

Seriously...try it sometime, because our game design workshop made us do it to prove how it's bad gameplay design.

To have Nintendo focus their entire platform on this, especially across multiple games, is simply a horrible idea. I'd imagine you could get away with it but only if the Gamepad (stupid name) is held out in front of you directly between you and your television.

yeah not only that, but the eyes have to focus on completely different depths when switching between them....one far away, and one really close...terrible idea.

I was just about to update my post with that point.

Just to be clear: when I say "flow" I don't mean seamless movements of the player, I mean the player's immersion in the game: the point at which there is no effort, no thought required, to do anything...because you just do it and everything just works...or "flows". The instant the player breaks the flow is the instant that every single game designer on the planet tries to avoid.
