Heh, you know, the first editor I used was Qoole, for Quake II.
Going to Q3Radiant (GtkRadiant didn't exist back then) was a real mind fuck. Every function was hidden in such an odd place, and it was so different. I hated it at first. But now that I know all the important keyboard shortcuts, it's impossible to go back to Qoole. GtkRadiant just works so fast, it's unbelievable.

Oh, I'm not sure about the 1.4 source... Did ID ever release it?
I think 1.6 is a continuation of the 1.4 source with features back-ported from 1.5.
I don't think id had anything to do with 1.4, and it's not them who suppose to release the source. 1.6 is based on 1.4, it was said 10 times already. The easiest way to get 1.4 source would be to contact people working on 1.6 obviously...
id Software did have a lot to do with 1.4, it was developed in part by TTimo at id Software and various community members. Radiant has been open source for the longest time (since QeRadiant). id Software probably still has the 1.4 source, I think it used to be on qeradiant.com or FTP, but then they tore down the whole site and replaced it with Trac, so I don't know where it is now.
Take a look at the SVN, join the mailinglist at qeradiant.com or try asking at irc.telefragged.com #qeradiant, that's where all the developers hang out.
