Re: Snow Leopard Thread
Yea, apparently OS X has been equipped with PAE for a while, but this is not really an optimal solution. 64-bit addressing provides a much more natural solution to allowing more memory within a system.bitWISE wrote:I love my mac but I still hate those commercials.
Actually, OSX has entirely different memory issues when it comes to 32bit versus 64bit and stands to gain the most performance from the transition.Geebs wrote:Installing it on a MacBook air over my wireless network turned out to be basically impossible. On the other hand, it works perfectly well once installed, and I'm really not going to have a nerd strop about 64 bitness with only 2 gigs of physical ram.
Not even going to think about running the Mac Pro in 64 bit at this point as it'd break all of my recording hardware and with the speed with which audio companies update drivers, we'll be on 10.8 before anything's ready

But I understand what you mean.
Oh and here is a very in depth review of SL, it covers bother everyday user and developer features.

I'm surprised no one has seemed to remember that previous mac os update which trashed everything if it didn't like the way you punctuated your boot drive's name...
In other news, I just downgraded my girlfriend's constantly crashing vista box to XP and the thing has run perfectly ever since

Re: Snow Leopard Thread
don't forget to install rosetta, kids!
Re: Snow Leopard Thread
Yea, I was prompted to install it for some Flex Builder (eclipse) extension I was using.

Re: Snow Leopard Thread
Ok, so my reservations about SL and soundcard drivers were totally baseless - works absolutely fine. Of course, because I'm a nerd, it's installed on an SSD in my Mac Pro, in a quadruple-boot system with leopard, xp and 7....
Re: Snow Leopard Thread
I installed Snow Leopard this saturday. Popped in the DVD, clicked install, let it run for 40 minutes and it was done without any interference. Everything works fine.....so basically it's a paid Leopard system upgrade..
Re: Snow Leopard Thread
Only program that I notice having problems is Quicksilver. I'm sure they're working on it (looks like they have a beta).

Re: Snow Leopard Thread
Haven't noticed anything with quicksilver. The vmware fusion beta is really nice. Looks like the next version will have an upgraded interface, 64bit host, and true support for Windows 7.

Re: Snow Leopard Thread
VMWare's great and all but it would be nice if they could have included the feature of not-making-windows-reactivate-every-time-you-upgrade-Fusion. Certain owners of perfectly legitimate copies of windows could have been forced to circumvent activation just to get the damn OS they bought to work...bitWISE wrote:Haven't noticed anything with quicksilver. Re: Snow Leopard Thread
The vmware tools are supposed to prevent that. Like if you activate a bootcamp install, you have to load up the tools so you don't need to activate the vm.
Re: Snow Leopard Thread
I did, and it didn't help; I think XP was getting upset at changes in the emulated network adapter and video card. Fortunately, in this entirely hypothetical situation, bypassing activation completely solves all of the issues. Allegedly.
Re: Snow Leopard Thread
Anyone noticed the time jumping back after booting from mac to windows again? Pissing me off.
Re: Snow Leopard Thread
Is that what causes that? I wondered why sometimes I had to reopen the Time/Date panel to get it to resync from the web.
Geebs: Sure does
An interesting note about Windows 7 is that there is a command you can run up to three time to extend the activation notice by another 30 days. I forget it though.
Geebs: Sure does
