After witnessing records to cassettes to discs in my lifetime, alongside 8-bit to 16-bit and so on graphics the 'jump' to HD that everyone seems to be clambering over like monkeys on a banana boat is nothing more than a step up the curb. It's not in any way a jump and it's not a fucking real banana so stop straddling it and eating it all up you goddam consumer apes
Hmmmm....steady dude. Surely if you are going to buy a film, you would want it to look its best? So why not get blu-ray? Are you an monkey because you want a better PC to play the latest games? By your logic we should be happy with a 14" black & white TV...
Where were you when the West was defeated?

Yep, I've heard nothing but bad reviews on 10,000 Bc. Rotten tomatoes gave it a rating out of 100 of something like 7%, lol.
I've just done a trade with someone on another forum and will be receiving Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind 30th Anniversary 2 disc blu ray edition with book in apparently mint condition for £7 inc P&P. Should receive it monday or tuesday. Obviously seen it before (when it first came out; showing my age!) but this is one of those rare movies that I do actually want to have permanently. I've asked him if he has blade runner too for a similar price.
Goddamnit! I have to admit to seremtan and bitwise, you're right about your reservations of watching blu ray on such a small screen (and only 720p). Currently watching dark knight and 19" doesn't cut it, hard to get absorbed into the movie the way I'd like and this size doesn't really showoff the blu ray effect that well Now I'm considering swapping it for a bigger screen. Do you think from a distance of about 6 foot, a 26" 1080p will be good enough, or, minimum 32" 1080p? The 32 is really pushing it as far as available space though in the bedroom. Now considering these:

Samsung is definitely a solid brand for displays. Personally I like plasmas over LCDs because they have better blacks, better viewing angles and the image has a smoother feel. The best thing about an LCD is you get roughly the same quality in any lighting, whereas plasmas kinda suck without the lights off or at least at some kind of low ambient level (I'll usually leave the light off in my living room and instead use the entry-way hall lights). Right now I'm running a 42" 1080i but if I buy another set I think I'd go 60".
Interesting article, reading it now. I must say, just pulling my tiny tv in so that it's now under 4 foot distance has made a big difference, and the blu ray experience is much more vivid. So it should be amazing with 1080 on a larger screen. Sound is also really excellent from this LG blu ray. Also, now I can see what all the fuss is about heath ledger, what a great actor he was and fantastic performance as the joker.

Yeah, I've heard plasma has better blacks. I've always noticed in shops though that LCD's catch my eye more than plasma because of the backlighting. 42" is a great size though. My brother has a 42" samsung LCD and I'm always impressed by it, unbelievably crystal clear picture when watching anything in HD.

Now really enjoy blu-ray and get ready to be blown away by The Dark Knights IMAX bits
Just fucking wow! The 19" was impressive for it's size, but THIS is like another world. The TV looks HUGE in my bedroom, lol. 32" inch tv's don't look big in the shops, but in my bedroom it's like watching 42". It's great.
Superb picture with blu ray, absolutely gorgeous. There is however, no headphone socket which is a pain. So I've plugged in a stereo phono cable to the audio out and that has a female minijack for my headphones. But there's no way to adjust the headphone volume, it's not affected by the tv volume. Does anyone know if there's a way, short of me connecting my headphone amp which has been collecting dust?
I just watched wall-e. What a blast, loved it. I'm so blown away by this tv and blu ray player, it's quite breathtaking. The clarity and detail is just superb! I've got the headphones running through a custom made headphone amp that I haven't used for a long time and the sound is utter perfection. The complete cinematic experience.
Now you've got a proper res TV for it, you just need to get a decent sound system instead of headphones and I'll recommend a Blu-Ray.
It doesn't have to be surround sound, stereo is fine, just make sure the quality is good.
No matter how good a pair of headphones are, it's a completely unnatural way to listen to anything: cause in nature you can always hear things in both ears.

wow
Was thinking the same thing.

I can't have a sound system in my bedroom and I really like headphones anyway, I feel I can pick out more detail. Have a listen to this. Assuming you have good headphones, you should find the spatial sound of this binaural recording quite interesting and incredibly realistic. And this is only a compressed version of the original. Listen to it all the way through if you can.
