Well... that doesn't mean he's an evil person just because he was part of the HJ does it?

Nope. No more than the entire population of Germany is evil due to having Hitler as their leader.

Well let's just say he'd rather see people die from AIDS than to allow them the use of condoms.

Another example is the abortion situation in Germany. Abortions are allowed until three months into the pregnancy, IF you get two counceling sessions. Those aren't really all that hard to get, but the catholic church (among others) used to give them until John Paul II. (and Ratzinger) actually prohibited priests to give those counceling sessions. (Okay, that's more stupid than evil, but anyway)

So basically he's just like John Paul II. without the good PR.

All jokes aside. Do people in Germany care that they have a fellow countryman in office? Collectively, the country seems quite secular, progressive, supportive of abortion rights, and very gay. All of which Ratzinger despises.

From what I've on TV many people seem to care. At least more than I expected.

When Ratzinger appeared on the balcony there were some of these german rome pilgrims to see, who cried or waved the national flag like in a soccer match. Especially the cathlics in the german southern bible belt (bavaria, where Ratzinger stems from) but also politicians of all parties seem to be proud of the new "german" pope.

Due to the neverending german story of 'some more patriotism, please', also the media channels underlined their hope for a german pope as soon as John-Paul seemed to drop the spoon. - In a moderate way of course, but it was quite clear that they favorized Ratzinger as a german, right from the beginning and although they knew he is a fundamentalist fuck who promotes medieval values.

Actually they're debating how a 'german' pope might affect germany's role in the world ...

Statistics are now saying only 37% of Germans think his election is a "good thing", most from his home state of Bavaria.

Also, the guy did join some Hitler youth group, but only because everyone was forced to. He abandoned the German army later.

Interesting. I can understand the enthusiasm, even if a bit tempered, but above all (german or not) people realize he is a 'fundamentalist fuck'.

37% ? - That's quite a lot considering that the Catholic Church whines about losing members since years.

They also said, he was a Flakhelfer in WW2 - launching missiles towards the Lord.
