Ugh.

Ok...to Peenyuh and R00k...sweet and simple: Angry letters don't do anything because there aren't enough people sending angry letters often enough. The reason why you are powerless is because you've let yourself become powerless by de-evolving your republic into an entity that both represents every person, but dismisses them because one voice in a million can be ignored. You didn't move as a group towards your own interests. You let the elites follow their interests because you convinced yourself that you were powerless to stop it. You didn't make enough demands, loudly enough. (like an organized work stoppage for an hour...nationwide) And elections aren't the only time you should be involved in democracies. And stop making fun of Canada whenever we have a referendum abo0t something. :smirk:

But hey...if you guys are full of such despair it's your own fault.

If the politicians thought for one second that they would pay any serious, long-lasting consequences for ignoring you, they'd stop...because their gravy train would derail and they'd be ruined in the public eye forever...like Brittany Spears and Micheal Jackson....whom alot of people would rather talk about.

No, he lost both elections. The Republicans just trashed enough ballots to get their stooge into office.

What have you been doing about the conservative legislation Canada has passed over the last few years? Did you do anything to help the political process in Europe while you were over there?

Don't preach at me, fatty. Do you think you're teaching me something?

The president did not get voted for democratically. It was electoral college voting. One of the main reasons we use it is to allow all states equal representation in this. You Euros should take a lesson from it in forming the EU. Essentially the US is divided into mini countries called states, they are UNITED. Full blown democracy is not practical for a country this size and has this size of a population. Even before this it was not due to travel and lines of communication.

We hold Democracy as a value in our Republic system. The Chinese are also a republic but they do not have our values. Having a parliament is being a republic ect...

R00k wrote:Are you implying that I voted for him? :olo:
no, because that was the electoral college, like you said. you only get to vote for the house of representatives, the least powerful branch of government
No most states vote the senators in democraticallly. In the ones that don't, that decision was voted on democraticallly.

Well first I want to apologize to the Canadians here. I am just a little frustrated that SOME Canadians on most other boards seem to hate us.

I want people outside of the US to know some things about us and my views on it. Our electoral college was enforced by our Civil War. The civil war was fought because the northern industrial states were running the show and the southern agricultural states were tired of it. They wanted to split because of it. It wasn't just about slavery that seems to overshadow this fact. Its in in our history.

Now more on topic; I dont know how its in Canada (even tho I visited there) and in other places but here it is taboo to talk about politics. If i decided to talk about politics at the water cooler one day at work it would not turn good. One thing, its likely to turn to chaos because each of us have our own opinions and they differ widely. We seem to gradually distance ourselves more and more politically. I think it is a little bit because we, the US, are so involved in so many different things. Iran, Israel, Iraq, NATO, UN, N. Korea, China relations, economics, social programs ect... that it is more and more difficult to find common ground in all with peers, groups and organizations (parties) that we have. As someone said, we can form a group but this is more difficult now.

I think the internet counters this political split we seem to have here. I think this next election is majorly going to be impacted by the net. You Canadian's and others can even help on here but I suggest not to do any US bashing or generalizations, that's counter-productive. We might do another-country bashing but lets try to stay productive.

but in doing so it denies individual citizens equal say since the votes cast in a state with a low population are worth more than those in one with a high population
You Euros should take a lesson from it in forming the EU.
no one has anything to learn about democracy from the united states. no country in its right mind and wanting actual democracy would choose a system like that
Essentially the US is divided into mini countries called states, they are UNITED. Full blown democracy is not practical for a country this size and has this size of a population. Even before this it was not due to travel and lines of communication.
this sounds like a load of bollocks, but i'll bite: please define "full-blown democracy"

XLguy means the US is soo fucking big, split and full of people that it simply needs a bit of authoritarianism to rule the whole country - and that is good. But please do not confuse that with China (Russia, ...) who meanwhile use the same line of reasoning and claim their 'own democratic way', because they are teh bad.

you just repeated what he said and it still made no sense. if the centre (federal government) were weak, it might be possible to argue that the elector system made sense (though i wouldn't personally) - however, the centre is strong, especially now in the days of the imperial presidency, which makes the elector system seem undemocratic, quaint and outmoded

Don't confuse disagreeing with the current leadership as hating Americans. The American populace are good people but your leader is a twat (and so is ours, to be honest). The commentary doesn't need to go one way either, our leaders are fair game too.

You're the tool dude. This thread talked about generalizations and how unproductive they are, then you make one after the fact. As seen here:

Then there's more proof of your lack of reading cmoprehension. Hint: He was ragging on me here:
