What is your hood like?
Re: What is your hood like?
I live in Fitzrovia. It's one quarter asian restaurants, one quarter whores, and half students.
Re: What is your hood like?
I'm on our house council (have no idea what that's called in English, but it's the "board" who manages the "association" that owns our building), so I know most of the people in our house. It's only 20 apartments, so it's not that many people.
Occationally I chat with the neighbors when we meet in the courtyard or on the stairway. Other than that I have no idea about all the other people living in our street. It's a nice enough city street with 6-7 story buildings, so quite a lot of people live there.
I'm rather friendly with some of the guys who runs the pizza place down the street though, we usually say hello when I walk by. I have no idea what their names are though, probably Muhammed or Ali or something like that.

Re: What is your hood like?
As far as apartments go, mine is in one of the best neighborhoods it can be. The neighbors suck though... the woman across the street threatened to call the cops on a Sunday afternoon at 5:30 cause I was wrestling around with this chick from work (drunk thing...) Then my boyfriend was yelling back at her cause he was trashed and I almost got evicted
The boyfriend lives in a neighborhood thats a god damn ethic rainbow.... the guy next door is black and a drug dealer (very nice guy.... with too many kids). In the apartment next door is the 20 year old coke heads on one side and this guy we just call "Click" on the other. Doesn't speak English.... Doesn't speak words. Down the street is a fat Mexican we call the mayor who has like 50 kids.... Can't get any more stereotypical then all this.

If it's the same as the US (they're called Homeowners Associations here) then they're run by a bunch of lifeless, bitter cunts that have nothing better to do than walk around and bitch at people for not keeping their grass cut to exactly 2.5". I got so lucky when I find a decent house in a nice neighborhood with not homeowners association. There's only one creepy fuck in the area that doesn't keep his grass cut, and it still doesn't look that bad. I can see the logic in trying to police the area and keep up the property values, but there are better ways to do it, and the douchebags that end up running these groups invariably abuse their petty authority.
Re: What is your hood like?
Despite what Sucrak is saying Saint John (you didn't even spell it right you dumb fuck) is not all that bad. Like any city it has its bad parts but all in all it's quite nice. It's definitely NOT the cesspool of criminal activity he says it is. He just wants to make you think he's "hard as fuck".Kracis wrote:I live in Saint-John which is atlantic canada's cesspool of criminal activity. My neighborhood is what you'd expect, full of bum's and theives.
I walked out my house yesterday and some punk that owes me 200$ is walking by, so I tell him to pay me my money or next time I see him walking around my block I'll run him over in my car.
lol yeah that was funny... I haven't seen him around.
I live about 100km away from Saint John in Fredericton and it's quite nice. I just moved in to a new apartment with the gf in the downtown core. My neighbors upstairs were loud as balls (5 girls) but they just moved out. The neighbor to the side of me is quite nice and pops over to say hello on occasion.

Hmm, doesn't sound like it's the same thing. Seems like the proper term for what I'm involved in is Housing cooperative.Nightshade wrote:If it's the same as the US (they're called Homeowners Associations here) then they're run by a bunch of lifeless, bitter cunts that have nothing better to do than walk around and bitch at people for not keeping their grass cut to exactly 2.5". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Housing_cooperative
The cooperative owns the real estate, and a board of volunteers are responsible for the loans and the maintenance of the property itself, while the people living in the building have an occupancy agreement and are responsible for the maintenance of their own apartments. Everyone are "shareholders" and pay a monthly fee to the cooperative to cover the larger maintenance costs.
Ah, here it is:
Wikipedia wrote:A tenant-owner's association (Swedish: bostadsrättsförening) is a legal term used in some Nordic countries (Sweden, Finland and Norway) for a type of joint ownership of property in which the whole property is commonly owned by all members by each having an individual "stake". Members are required to have a tenant-ownership, which represents the apartment, and in most cases live permanently at the address. There are some legal differences between the countries, mainly in the ownership condition. In Sweden, members are formally renting the apartment from the association without limitation in time (in opposite to a normal renting with limitation in time.)

Our neighborhood is full of firemen, policemen and nurses. We've got the Asian-family-that-doesn't-speak-English next to us. Most everybody seems pretty nice.

Re: What is your hood like?
Historically half of my neighbors(the majority) invaded from Southern China, including my mother's mother.
They don't belong to the highest class, but at least belong to higher class than half-blooded natives.
The rests are miserable half-blooded native japanese(my mother's father).
The former spies and sucks the latter.
While my father's grandfather was kidnapped from Manchuria by japanese army as a slave.
My mother is sucking on my father.
Everytime I quit my job, my mother's mother(a spy) threatens me "You'll be arrested by the police!"
So I hate her than anyone else in my family.
A few months ago, another young minority, whose ancestor was kidnapped from North Korea or Manchuria, in my village suicided.
About one year ago yet another young minority went mad and killed his father and set fire to his own house.
Both of them had quitted their jobs again and again.
I don't have any friends in my village since I realized the situation.

Re: What is your hood like?
check out our meter maids.
these girls walk the streets of surfers and if they see a parking meter is about to run out they feed the meter for you.

My building has a strata and it's a bunch of idiots who give themselves titles and send out reports once a month. kinda cool though, cuz otherwise nothing would get done. That reminds me, I have to suggest opening the gym and pool earlier each day.
Re: What is your hood like?
Just moved a few months ago from a frat/football house infested block. The sort of place where kids would play beer pong on the sidewalk... pure class. The girlfriend's car was broken into there and I watched two mexicans try to steal a bike outside my window.
My new neighborhood is great. Very liberal and fairly rich. Very quiet, except for the kids across the street on pogo sticks. My two immediate neighbors are retired university profs, and we chat when we see each other in the yard. Paul Wellstone's (ex-)campaign manager (also Amy Klobuchar's senior adviser and John Kerry's MN campaign director) lives across the street and this friday there's a fund raiser and backyard concert for the DFL mayor of St. Paul at his house. Lot's of other block parties, too.
I'm about 4 blocks away from the University but there aren't any students living nearby, so it's win-win. Short walk to the local market, bistro, library, etc. I love it.

i live just north of kensington market (which is where puff lives, so we're 5 min walk from each other). Great neighbourhood - too diverse to classify ethnically or culturally - you got a peaceful mix of fucking everything, though most seem to share a neo-hippy sorta thing.

I live in the West End of Vancouver. My apartment is by the beach and the neighborhood is a pretty diverse place with tons of great shops, ethnic restaurants, and some good nightlife.

Re: What is your hood like?
I live in a quiet, friendly neighborhood with a diverse group of people. Most people give a friendly wave when they cross paths and stop to talk when they have time. There always seems to be someone out walking their dog, riding bikes or just out for a casual stroll. There are also a lot of kids in the neighborhood that all play together everyday.
We are really close to lots of shopping, movie theaters, restaurants, AAA baseball stadium (Mets spring training) and family entertainment. Though it does seem like more and more houses are going up for sale or rent. But that can be chalked up to the recent decline of the housing market. It seem that quite a few people bought in at the wrong time.

Re: What is your hood like?
I live right across the street from a major tourist attraction and half a block away from the Queen's palace, which means there are always people on the street during the day. At night it's really quiet, though. Everything I need is within walking or cycling distance and the buildings are gorgeous.
The neighbors are all friendly and nice but there hasn't been anything like a "block party" here so I don't know them all that well.
