Mazda, you need to study anatomy if you're going to do this sort of thing professionally. Her back is not arched properly and her legs are going off on strange angles.
The perspective is way off too. You need to draw some guidelines before you work in the detail that you have here. The car is whacked out in a weird perspective and the way you drew her left arm is out of perspective as well (plus its longer than her right).
Her breast is way too low as well.

Finally, you're committing the #1 sin of digital art by clumsily mixing your mediums. It looks like you used an airbrush to create the dust effect and then an acrylic brush to make her hair have the texture that it does.

Finally the "hotpants" look like you used some sort of canned PS texture and it is terribly jarring to the eye. Do a tutorial on how fabric looks in an artistic medium and you should be able to make it work, for god's sake though don't use what you have.

thats has a very large pecentage of rubbish right there !

She doesn't have a 1950's pinup figure. She needs larger hips, thin waist, big boobs, long thin legs. Image-Google 50's pinups with SafeSearch off (research is fun). While you're at it, Image-Google 50's to get an idea of the era.

50's prints usually have very bright primary or pastel colours. She would the part if she had big golden-blond curls. Fishnets or high-thighs (not knee length like you have there). Those green frilly things are not hot and I wouldn't even call them pants.

The cartoon theme doesn't look right, you need more of a painted scene. That's the idea of an illustrated pin-up, supposed to look somewhat realistic. Certainly the most iconic of the era are illustrations by Norman Rockwell (Google + Wiki him!). You certainly should take a look to get an idea of what illustrations looked like at the time.

I agree with Transient, you need a better perspective and a more interesting placement of angles to draw your eye across the image. The focal point right now goes from big green blob to blue car, both of which are perfectly aligned. Your eye doesn't really want to move anywhere else in the image (though you are mentally trying to look away from the frills :p ).

obsidian has a greater understanding of whats what.

not full-on or anything , but good tho.

why not just find the original?

theyre out there , i remember for sure 2-3 from 50-60's pulps

i'm sure i've seen this concept executed many many times b4 so i wont get detailed about createing something thats been created so many times b4. :paranoid:

todays breed or "artist' would find at least a dozen already done ones and make something new and updated.

make it an avril clone pissed off at a 350z in downtown city areas.

not that tho jus makin an example

plus :olo:

Robert Bane Editions has some pin up stuff you can look at done by current artists. Olivia De Berardinis is my favorite. I have a signed giclee of this pic:

Great Googly Moogly! Fuck me I dig that pic.

Is that a vintage print or a reimagining of 50's cheesecake?

I'd do it by hand and clean it up in photoshop or if you'd rather do it on the computer then learn painter. It's never going to look very good if you use gradients. Also draw from a life model and read some artistic anatomy books (Anatomy for the Artist is a fantastic book to both sculpt and draw from) to practice figurative drawing.

Post updates. How long do you have?

it's a good concept draft.

like others i'm having a hard time pulling "1950s" from that image in its current state. i think your biggest challenge is going to be integrating your current style with the 1950s pinup look. though once you get it down it'll look pretty damn sweet.

not to sound like an echo or anything but you do need to work on the angles. right now it looks like she's standing up on a giant rock or something. i think just using a more true angle would solve the problem of needing a more dramatic one. go outside and get a comperable distant from a car and squat down to ass height. the car should be much closer to the horizon with the horizon itself being lower.

one thing that could actually help you out TONS is if you got someone to model for you. then you could actually go to a giant parking lot or field and place a car and your model in positions that you might think work. take some pictures and use them as outlines for your image. if you can get a female friend to pose in a skimpy outfit (like those ultra short and tight shorts with a skin tight baby T, or even just a bakini) and barrow a buddies 1950 muscle car than you'd be all set!

Captain Mazda wrote:An up-and-coming band named The Junktronics has given me the opportunity to design a CD cover for them. What they wanted was a girl drawn in a 50's style pin-up wearing nothing but hot pants, shown on the left from shoulder to thighs in the middle of a desert with a car driving off on the right. The environment colours should be plain and 60's-looking. Apparently emphasis should be on the ass as they want the band logo there.

I just finished the first version of the front and sent it to the lead vocalist. What do you think so far?

Thanks for the advice, Stu. My freehand is only good when I've got a reference to work from.

Oh it's all hand drawn and scanned into Photoshop where I've done the line art and brushed the colours. I haven't used any gradients or anything. I'll post updates as I work on it. As for time, I don't think I have much :paranoid:

And thanks Zark <3

Ye-yes? :paranoid:

lol, I pretty much failed this horrendously. I guess that'll teach me to try to get into an art industry without any professional art training and education. I may need to save up and buy a tablet, because drawing by hand and scanning into a computer limits me to a bit of a cartoony outcome. Oh well, live and learn I guess. My strengths lie in Photoshop-only work anyways, although I think I did a pretty good job with this one:

It can still work cartoony, you just need to clean everything up and outline it, getting rid of the fuzzy airbrush stuff etc. You'd want to vary the width of the lines as well, to get that sweeping look. These are by an artist called Coop, there's plenty more of his stuff online:

actually considering the normal q3w response, i'm suprised at the amount of constructive criticism.

btw mazda, your redoing of the model there is A LOT better.
