Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden appeared in a new message aired on an Arabic TV station Friday night, for the first time claiming direct responsibility for the 2001 attacks against the United States.

I remember this quite specifically actually... as i had to write many 9/11 stories in the weeks after it happened, and my editor in chief very quickly demanded that i blame Al Qaida and bin Laden. At first i refused because there wasn't any damn evidence! No quotes, no televised speeches, nothing to point to the fact they were behind it. And yet every major media outlet was announcing withing days that it was Al Qaida. It was disgraceful and ugly, and i'm ashamed to admit i caved into the pressure pretty quickly and edited most of my stories :\

Then suddenly, after three years of continuous denying by a man who has no record of lying or misleading in his statements, bin Laden claims to be the evil mastermind? It just sets off this big ass array of scepticism warning lights in my head. Remember, bin Laden had a lot to gain by taking / being given the blame.

He sent a tape claiming that he was behind the attacks. Right from the horses mouth. I tend to believe someone that states the facts on camera.

Uhh, riiight. You seem to forget the African embassy bombings? bin Laden's videotapes swearing to destroy every man, woman, and child in America? His interview with Peter Arnett?

I'm talking purely 9/11 here, the embassy bombings is another story. And i'm not entirely sure, but if i recall correctly, bin laden did claim responsibility for that. The Arnett interview was interesting in many ways and bin laden indeed vowed to take the fight to the USA, but he never once claimed the 9/11 plan.

If i repeatedly say i hate my neighbour and want to kill him, that he should die die die like the imperialist dog that he is - and the next day he's found dead, i'm sure to be a prime suspect. But did i actually do it? Fuck knows.

Seriously, if bin Laden was cought tomorrow and put into an honest, non politically manipulated court and put on trail for 9/11 and nothing else, he'd probably walk on lack of evidence.

But you can't separate the embassy bombings when considering bin Laden's involvement. It's part of the whole plan, and was a direct attack on American sovereign territory.
If you howl for your neighbor's blood repeatedly, he turns up dead, and you're on video claiming you did it, then...
